This paper discusses the internal logic of college English curriculum reconstruction and teaching reform by means of qualitative analysis in general comprehensive colleges and universities. Taking academic English courses as the starting point, this paper puts forward a diversified “three-in-one” layout for the college English curriculum reform of EGP (English for General Purpose), EAP (English for Academic Purpose) and ELE (English for Liberal Education). All the three courses are regarded as indispensable in college English curriculum system. This paper arrives at the conclusion that the teaching and learning of EGP should be selected according to different skills and provide personalized counterpart services; EAP can only be a component and supplement of college English courses. As an optional course for senior students, it focuses on academic skills, meets the academic needs of some students and prepares them academically, and should not replace EGP; ELE should include a series of language and culture courses with English as the medium or carrier and with content as the basis, as well as classic reading courses in the humanities or closer subjects. Combining the instrumental language course with other deep humanistic courses, we may expand the depth and width of the teaching content, pay attention to the learners’ advanced thinking and critical thinking ability, and insist on connotative development. College English education should be multi-dimensional and multi-layered, but always a whole. It should realize the balance and organic unity of three courses between instruments and humanity.

Typological variations exist in counterfactual expressions which include dedicated markers and non-dedicated markers. Different syntactic and semantic features of counterfactual markers can be found from a cross-linguistic perspective. Dedicated counterfactual markers alone can convey counterfactual meanings, while non-dedicated counterfactual markers appear in the form of combination. The former is a sufficient condition for the counterfactual meaning, and there are no fake features. The latter can be semantically fake when they signal counterfactual meanings. Counterfactual meanings generated by dedicated markers cannot be cancelled, while those generated by non-dedicated markers can be easily cancelled.

Embodied cognition is a heated topic in cognitive science, focusing on the correlation between body, mind and cognition. By using the visual analysis of CiteSpace, this paper analyzes 2383 articles on embodied cognition published between 2010 and 2020 from the web of science core collection. The results show that: (1) Research on embodied cognition has gradually shifted from theoretical exploration to empirical studies of behavioral and brain imaging experiments; (2) The hot topics in current embodied cognition encompass language comprehension, conceptual representation, perception, mental simulation, localization of the premotor cortex, emotion, memory, time cognition and social interaction; (3) Recently, new research topics, such as spatial cognition, individual difference, cognitive dynamics, extension of embodiment, distributed cognition, and semantic memory, have emerged as the frontier in embodied cognition.

Syntactic complexity refers to the variational range and complexity of language production forms. In recent years, it has attracted more and more attention from second language writing researchers and become one of the current topics in the field of second language acquisition. This paper retrieves the research on the syntactic complexity of second language writing in the past ten years at home and abroad, and includes 52 core journal literatures. Through summarizing, sorting out and analyzing these literatures, it is found that the existing research contents mainly focus on learners, task design and measurement indicators. There are also some deficiencies, such as unbalanced research objects, simplex task variables, incomplete measurement indexes. Future research can be carried out from the two subjects of “l(fā)earner” and “factors related to task design” to explore the relationship between syntactic complexity and L2 writing performance in a more systematic and comprehensive way.

William Golding, whose novels are known as modern allegories, integrates elements of religion, classical literature and myths into his characterization, shapes a group of tragic characters with the characteristics of subversion and anti-tradition, and highlights the characters’ conceptual and realistic characteristics with superb symbolism and metaphorical art. Golding stroke at the essence of the evil human nature with the tragedy of his characters in his novels, criticized the traditional liberal capitalist values, presented the survival predicament of modern people, and thus showed his unique allegorical art in characterization and contributed a vitality to postwar character aesthetics. At the same time, he skillfully combined individual existence with group dilemma presentation, displaying a community experience through that of individuals. It is of practical significance in showing human predicaments in existence and providing reflections and alerts on human nature and morality in modern society.

This thesis offers a study on Crane’s aesthetic representation of modern machine in the context of aesthetic modernity, and argues that Crane’s machine writings originate from a desire of representing the new experience of his contemporary world. However, in the process of representing modern machine, an internal paradox occurs. Modern machine has to be metamorphosed into traditional organic things in order to enter the aesthetic realm. As a result, the traditional world actually occupies the present position, making Crane’s contemporaneity exist in name only. This thesis argues that at the bottom of this paradox is a discord between human body that modernity strives to resuscitate and the modern machine that in the meanwhile alienates human body, and the essence of Crane’s aesthetic representation of modern machine is a desperate desire of em-bodying the machine.

The analysis of translation violence should distinguish the subject and the object. The source text, the translator and the reader are subject as well as object of translation violence. The nature of translation determines that translation violence is inevitable. Only by controlling the degree of translation violence can aesthetic effect be produced. The source text and the reader should give the translator some autonomy and creativity, and the translator should also control the violence within a moderate range, so as not to bring harm to the source text and the reader. Stephen Owen’s translation ofWenxinDiaolongis a good example of controlling translation violence within a reasonable degree. The translator gives full play to his subjectivity, offers readers a translation with violent aesthetic effect, and brings them aesthetic experience full of exotic adventure. The translation of Chinese classics should give the translator more space for creativity, understand and tolerate the translation violence, and strive for aesthetic effect on the basis of strictly controlling the degree of translation violence, so that Chinese culture can truly go global.

The translation and dissemination of Chinese fairy tales in the English-speaking world has achieved fruitful results. Not only have a wide range of story categories been covered, but also abundant editions have been reprinted. The publication and circulation of English Chinese stories have also spanned across the centuries. Anthologies of Chinese fairy tales have been widely collected in libraries around the world, extending a far-reaching influence. The major translating subjects of English Chinese fairy tales consist of missionaries, scholars and children’s literature translators, whose efforts in merging Western and Chinese literary poetics, fostering verisimilitude and fairytalizing the stories, promote the translation and dissemination of English Chinese fairy tales in the West. To scrutinize the differentiated characteristics of different translating subjects while identifying their purposes and motivation will contribute to a better dissemination of Chinese literature and traditional Chinese culture.

Co-translating which exerts highly positive effects on cultural communication among countries and nations can date back to the very beginning of the translation history. From the perspective of the Sociology of Translation, the paper aims to chart the formation and evolution of co-translating modes during the Ming and Qing dynasties in light of the core concepts of Bourdieu’s Theory of Practice Sociology such as field, capital and habitus. “Envy” is an emotion with many connotations. According to subjective experience, the conceptual content of “envy” can be expressed in different languages by metaphor and metonymy. Based on the Chinese-English parallel corpus ofADreamofRedMansions, this study divides “envy” into three types and makes a qualitative analysis of the metaphor and metonymy of “envy” and their translation. This study finds that both Yang’s English translation and Hawks’s English translation primarily adopt domestication in translating metaphors related to “envy”, and foreignization in translating metonymies of “envy”. It can be explained by the physiological characteristics of the human body, human life experience, and traditional culture.
