不忘初心果本愿

2019年5月13日，習(xí)近平總書記主持召開中央政治局會議，決定從2019年6月開始，在全黨自上而下分兩批開展“不忘初心、牢記使命”主題教育。一些熱心翻譯的讀者可能已經(jīng)注意到了關(guān)于這場全國性學(xué)習(xí)活動(dòng)的如下表述：

6月，我們國家在全黨開展“不忘初心、牢記使命”主題教育活動(dòng)。

China launched an education campaign themed “staying true to our founding mission” throughout the Party in June.

顯然，對于中國共產(chǎn)黨來說，“初心”的最基本含義就是成立之初確定的使命（the founding mission）。“不忘初心”一詞出自唐代白居易《畫彌勒上生幀記》：“所以表不忘初心，而必果本愿也?！币馑际钦f時(shí)時(shí)不忘記最初的發(fā)心，最終一定能實(shí)現(xiàn)本來的愿望。

或正因此，“不忘初心”可譯為：stay/remain true to ones initial/original aspiration。如：

1.不忘初心，牢記使命，高舉中國特色社會主義偉大旗幟，決勝全面建成小康社會，奪取新時(shí)代中國特色社會主義偉大勝利，為實(shí)現(xiàn)中華民族偉大復(fù)興的中國夢不懈奮斗。

Remain true to our original aspiration and keep our mission firmly in mind， hold high the banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics， secure a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects， strive for the great success of socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era， and work tirelessly to realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.

2.無論是弱小還是強(qiáng)大，無論是順境還是逆境，我們黨都初心不改、矢志不渝。

Whether in times of weakness or strength， whether in times of adversity or smooth sailing， our Party has never forgotten its founding mission， nor wavered in its pursuit.
