Following in the footsteps of the nested spatial arrangement first explored in House in Sanda,Machiya in Minase doesn't part ways with the formalism of the square plan and central column.Site conditions are matched with the arrangement of walls to dictate the house’s slight, sensitive slants. Its height assumes an intermediate scale between one and two floors. The rugged concrete of the exterior walls, painted silver,is in a so-called“unfinished”state.It is at once fictitious and realistic;symbolic as well as substantive. These double-meanings,woven repeatedly into this representative early project, are characteristic of many of Sakamoto’s works.

Unfinished
When building a house, doing it nearly and completely is a commonly understood practice of general contractors. However,Sakamoto ventured to challenge this idea in his house, permitting -for example -abnormal and destabilized facades, introducing rough wall surface treatments,or doing away with on-site formwork.

Viewing from living space, wood panel and concrete walls are both painted white -an experiment in eliminating the textural nuance of individual materials.Site conditions would alter the joints for the concrete formworks;as a result, unfinished traces are visible on the interior, for example,on the surfaces of the dining area wall.A protruding portion of the fa?adeat right is expressed as an alcove on the interior.A window positioned high, admits sunlight and wind while keeping nose and glimpses out.
