    三、閱讀理解(共15小題,每題2分,滿分30分)

    A

Microfinance is becoming a big business. It started as a way to provide very small loans (貸款) to people in developing countries so they could begin to move themselves out of poverty. A few hundred dollars could mean a lot to a poor businessman with a promising idea.

Mr Cook, an economist, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his work with banking for the poor. He formed the Green Bank in 1983. Today there are microfinance providers all over the world and anyone can be a microlender through a site like Kiva.org. You choose a project and provide at least twentyfive dollars of the amount requested. Three out of four loans have gone to women, which is common with microfinance.

Kiva spokeswoman Ramsey says the site has grown even with the economic downturn. The total value of loans made through Kiva, she says, is nearing fiftytwo million dollars. The downturn has not had a big effect on loan repayments either. The current repayment rate is ninetyseven percent. But Ramsey says that because of the credit crisis, microfinance organizations are finding it harder to get loans from banks.

Kiva works with microfinance organizations in fortytwo countries. These “field partners” keep the interest charged on the loans. The average term is twelve months. And the average interest rate is almost twentythree percent.

Returns like that help explain why microfinance now includes big hanks and other lenders. Mr. Cook has said he worries that lenders may be more interested in profits than poverty reduction. Borrowers, he says, are often misled about the true price of a loan. “For twenty years we set the price to cover the cost. Now, some organizations are setting the price to whatever they can get away with,” he says.

He supports a new effort based in the United States called Microfinance Transparency. The aim is to prevent abuses by letting borrowers compare pricing information from different lenders.

    36. Small loans are becoming more and more popular in the world because________.

    A. they are mostly provided to women

    B. they are very important for some websites

    C. their average term is only one year

    D. they help reduce poverty and provide lenders with profits

    37. According to the passage, what would be the interest earned on a loan of 100 dollars for one year?

    A. 77 dollars. B. 97 dollars.

    C. 3 dollars. D. 23 dollars.

    38. The writer intends to tell us that________.

    A. Mr. Cook was honored for founding a bank and a website

    B. microfinance is a great success, though there are still problems to be solved

    C. lenders as well as borrowers should get away with all that they can

    D. now all borrowers can avoid being misled by comparing different pricing information

After winning a big game, athletes are often asked how they attained that success. Most say their achievement is the result of grueling hard work and intense practice. Usually athletes say how hard it is to win the big games. At the opposite end of the spectrum, however, is the fact that losing the big game, or, in my case, all the games, can be even tougher.

From the spectators'?point of view, last year's basketball season for my high school team was nothing short of an embarrassment. And while 0 and 20 is certainly nothing to be proud of, that season had a bigger impact on me than any other, and probably more than any season since.

As a team captain, I knew it probably wouldn't be the easiest year, but did I ever think we would lose every game? Of course not. Since six of our top players had graduated, it was clear that we were a young team who would struggle. The struggle began earlier than expected, though, as our team's starting center was suspended for the season, and two key members decided to quit after two weeks. At some point, quitting probably passed through every player's mind, but, in the end, we all stuck it out, vowing to work even harder.

Then there came a time when even our own coach had given up on us. Personally, I felt like it was no longer worth giving my all. I thought, if even the coach doesn't believe in us, why should I? But just as my hope began to fade, a teammate called a meeting. He said, “Nobody thinks we're going to win, and heck, we may not, but, as teammates and friends, we owe it to each other to give it our all every game.”

Sure, it was a little cliché, but it was that moment that taught me how to be a leader. It hit me then that I may have been a captain, but I, like others in my position, certainly didn't deserve the role. As a leader you can never quit on the team who looks up to you. It is one thing to be named captain and feel great and go through the motions, but it is quite another to be a real captain and make sure everyone works to their potential all the time.

I am sure it is great to go through high school without losing and bringing home awards. But in all honesty, I relish the fact that my team lost every game last year. It may not help me to become a better basketball player, but it already has made me a better leader, and person.

    42. What was the biggest problem with the author's team last season?

    A. Several key members were unable to play the games.

    B. Their coach no longer wanted to instruct them.

    C. There were no actual leaders on the team.

    D. Most of players lost hope and wanted to quit.

    43. In the text, the author seems to suggest that a good leader should________.

    A. be confident about himself

    B. make sure everyone goes all out

    C. work hard to win the games

    D. feel great about his team

    44. By saying “we owe it to each other to give it our all every game.” (Paragraph 4) the teammate means that all of them should________.

    A. be responsible for the losses

    B. try their best on the court

    C. feel thankful for what they've done

    D. get together to win every game

    45. What is the main idea the author aims to express in the text?

    A. Success is the result of hard work.

    B. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

    C. One can learn something from the failure.

    D. A real leader should never give up.

The night was soft and warm as I lay on our living room sofa, gazing at the ceiling. I was thinking of the hospital. We had gone there that afternoon to visit my father for Valentine's Day. Daddy was in a high bed that was folded in half some way. He looked alright to me. I didn't know why he kept going to that place anyway.

I sat as quietly as possible. My trouble was that I wanted to hug him and I was afraid of what Mama would say if I climbed up on his bed to do it. I didn't know why she would mind—I only knew she would. Sometimes she said I was too rough. But I was such a little girl and Daddy was so big, how could I hurt him? I thought there must be some other reasons why he couldn't wrestle with me like he used to. Maybe he was too tired.

My parents talked for a long time while I looked out of the window and played with my brother and sister. I didn't like that place and I wanted to go. There didn't seem to be anything to do there. Then, all at once, we were leaving. Daddy called me to his bedside and told me to be sure to say my prayers. I said I would and kissed him quickly on the cheek. Then I was glad to leave that building. The people in there were sick except, of course, my Daddy. He was not sick at all.

As I settled comfortably into the depths of the sofa, deep in thought. I was startled by the shrill sound of the telephone. That made me angry—now Mama would get up and find I was not sleeping yet. Why did somebody have to call then anyway?

Just as I had suspected, Mama appeared. Mama spoke for only a few minutes, asking questions like “when?” and “how?” She shook me then and told me to go into my own room. I knew it—the telephone call would ruin everything. Then she woke my oldest sister. In a few seconds the whole house was buzzing with some sort of news. “At eleven o'clock. ”“...it had to happen sometime...” “...too young to be dead. ”I heard these phrases, but I couldn't put together their meaning.

Mama came then and told me he was dead. My Daddy was dead? No! No! No! It was not true. He couldn't be dead. He was alive, he had kissed me only that afternoon. People didn't die just like that! It was not like stepping on a fly... people took years to die... they only died when they were old... very old with gray hair and wrinkles and stooped bodies. Young people don't die. Not people I knew... not anyone I loved. Not my father! He was mine and no one could take my father away from me. He would live forever.

I hated that person who called. It was not true and that was a horrible thing to say. It was not funny. It scared me. Mama believed it, though. She shouldn't. If she only listened to me I'd tell her the truth... IT ISN'T TRUE... IT ISN'T!

Just wait—next time Daddy came home I'd tell him about the person who called. He'd laugh and say Mama shouldn't have taken it seriously. After all, that couldn't happen. He was not even sick.

And do you know what else would happen when Daddy came home the next time? I would jump on his lap and hug him until he couldn't even breathe! And he wouldn't mind—because that's what daddies were for.

    46. The little girl's mother would not let her hug her father because________.

    A. she was not allowed to do that in the hospital

    B. she might upset her father

    C. he was too tired and couldn't wrestle with her like he used to

    D. her father was so sick that her roughness might hurt him

    47. When Mama answered the telephone she told the child to go to her own room because .

    A. the child was disturbing her

    B. Mama did not want the child to hear the conversation

    C. the child was too sleepy to know what was happening

    D. Mama was angry that the child was still awake

    48. The child's immediate reaction to the news of her father's death was that of________.

    A. anger B. despair

    A. you should let him or her know

    B. you should hug him or her all the time

Psychologists tell us that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture. This process, which helps us to deal with culture shock, is the way our brain and our personality reacts to the strange new things we meet with when we move from one culture to another.

Culture shock begins with the “honeymoon stage”. This is the period of time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We may be suffering from “jet lag” but we are thrilled to be in the new environment. You see new sights, hear new sounds and language and eat new kinds of food. This honeymoon stage can last for quite a long time because we feel we are involved in some kind of great adventure.

Unfortunately, the second stage of culture shock can be more difficult. After we have settled down into our new life, we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family. This period of cultural adjustment can be very difficult and lead to the new arrival rejecting or pulling away from the new culture. This “rejection stage''?can be quite dangerous because the visitor may develop unhealthy habits. This stage is considered a crisis in the process of cultural adjustment and many people choose to go back to their homeland or spend all their time with people from their own culture speaking their native language. Almost all the little problems that everybody has in daily life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when faced within a foreign culture.

The third stage of culture shock is called the “adjustment stage”. This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humour usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor!

The fourth stage can be called “adaptation”. Now you feel quite comfortable in your new surroundings. You can cope with most problems that occur. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them. If you meet someone from your country who has just arrived, you can be the expert on life in the new culture and help them to deal with their culture shock.

There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don't know about. This is called “reverse culture shock”. Surprisingly, this occurs when you go back to your native culture and find that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle!

AI (artificial intelligence) has raised a widespread concern that it is making machines more powerful and efficient, shortening the list of current jobs that only a human can do. At the same time, some people are getting more optimistic about the outlook of having a robot at home to help share the burden, such as washing and cleaning. When it comes to do housework, most of Americans would like it better if someone else just did it for them.

    56. own 57. survived 58. helpful 59. unknown / unfamiliar 60. changes

    五、One possible version:

With the development of technology, AI like robots are coming for our current jobs. While some people show their concern about the issue, others consider it normal to have a robot in their homes.

I'm totally in favor of owning robots in our daily life. First of all, they can perform tasks faster than humans with more accuracy. What's more, they do not care about the comfort and security of their environment, therefore saving workers from boring and even dangerous tasks. Last but not least, they can work at a constant speed with no breaks and perform assignments at a steady high level.

To be honest, what we should really worry about is not the presence of robots themselves but the absence of necessary knowledge about them. Therefore, it is definitely wiser for people to become more familiar with our future helper rather than consider it a question of robots winning and humans losing.(154)
