The Lord of the Rings is popular among students, but they just watching the movie for fun. Here, its for principles and appreciation.
Teaching goals and objectives
1.To improve students ability to read—to get information from the passage AND make a list of the information without book;
2.To make students know more about the masterpiece--“The Lord of the Rings”;
3.To enable Students to put some words and forms of sentence into practice.
4. To make students be able to write a film review.
Students needs analysis
Reading for students is to make them be skilled in get information and background culture.
Teaching Procedure:
Step1 Lead-in
1) Sharing an extract from a movie, and asking students to judge where is it from according to the key words in the extract.
Extract: The world is changed.
I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air.
Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it.
It began with the forging of the Great Rings....
And nine rings were gifted to the race of Men...
For within these rings was bound the strength and will to govern each race.
But they were all of them deceived, for another ring was made.
In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret a Master Ring, to control all others...One Ring to rule them all.
One by one, the Free Lands of Middle-earth fell to the power of the Ring.
2) Then give students several pictures about the movie, and ask them to work in groups and share more information about it.
3) Share their information in the whole class.

Step2 Reading
1. Skimming—reading for information and questions
1) Give students 8mins to read the passage on their own and find answers to some easy questions, at the same time they must set some questions by themselves according to the information they have got.
Questions:
①Who is the writer of The Lord of the Rings?
②Where does the story take place?
③Find out all races existing on Middle Earth.
④What do the three books mainly talk about?
2) Work in groups to ask and answer questions.
3) Each group chooses 1—2questions and asks other students.
[Rational of the activity design]The activity is designed for students to think and get information. Self-study gives them enough time to think by themselves. Coming up with questions is a process making sure that they have got some information. And asking and answering makes everyone share and dig more information.
2.Scanning—reading for more details
1) Pick some difficult questions to discuss together
2) Pick the sentences which students have problems with and first ask students to discuss in groups and then in the whole class.

Step3 Conclude the outline of the story AND share a film review with students.

Step4 Words and sentences
1) According to the handout to refer to reference book to get the usage by themselves
2) Explain them in class
3) Ask students to make sentences or translate sentences in pairs.

Step5 Homework
Write a film review of The Lord of the Rings.
Appreciate the movie on your vacation.
