走出“翻譯定義”的誤區(qū)

摘 要：論述翻譯理論界的熱點議題何為翻譯和翻譯定位、定義，指出翻譯定義中的誤區(qū)是將翻譯定義與翻譯理想混為一談；兼論中國翻譯理論界、翻譯教科書視為“金科玉律”的所謂的奈達翻譯定義不是翻譯定義。不是翻譯定義的理由：一是“翻譯定義”四字是中國翻譯理論家加在奈達一論翻譯的句子的前面的，奈達本人沒有說那是翻譯定義；二是“定義”是對某一概念的客觀準確的描述，而奈達的那一句話是表達翻譯理想的主觀愿望的表述，不是對翻譯的內涵的客觀描述。時代在發(fā)展，翻譯在變化，翻譯需要重新定位、定義。

Abstract： This paper is a study of the hot topic of the Chinese translation theory circle--redefinition of translation， and the misunderstanding of translation definition by some theorists which confuses translation wishes with translation definition . The article also argues that the so-called “Nidas translating definition” is not translating definition.The reasons are twofold： firstly， Nida himself did not call the sentence that is used by him to explain the meaning of translation a translating definition， whereas Chinese theorists labeled it as the translating definition； secondly， judging from the meaning of definition， that sentence is not translating definition in that it does not disclose the nature objectively， but instead expresses the subjective wishes of Nida.

上世紀80年代以來，中國翻譯界一直在構造翻譯學。翻譯學要成為“學”，必須有一個完整的翻譯理論體系。翻譯定義是中國翻譯理論體系的龍頭。翻開每一本翻譯教科書，它們開篇的第一章無不是翻譯定義。中國的翻譯理論家對翻譯做出了無數(shù)個定義，還從國外引進了很多個翻譯定義。最近，中國翻譯界的最高權威刊物以大篇幅的編按者號召對翻譯重新定位和定義[1]，國內很多著名翻譯理論家著文發(fā)表高見。翻譯定義在中國翻譯理論體系中的重要性由此可見一斑。本文論述何為翻譯定義以及翻譯理論界對翻譯定義的認識誤區(qū)，同時兼論奈達翻譯定義不是翻譯定義。

一、何為定義

新牛津詞典對“定義”的定義是：“definition .a statement of the exact meaning of a word，especially in a dictionary 定義，釋義。*an exact statement or description of the nature， scope， or meaning of something確切概述，明確描述。our definition of what constitutes poetry我們對詩歌構成的確切描述?！盵2]1528

筆者對以上定義理解如下：

1.定義是對一個詞——特別是詞典的詞條的確切意義的表述，反過來說，對一個詞——特別是詞典的詞條的確切意義的表述是定義。

2.定義也是對某事或者某物的性質、范疇或者意義的確切的描述，反過來說，對某事或者某物的性質、范疇或者意義的確切的描述是定義，如，我們對詩歌構成的確切描述就是我們對詩歌構成的定義。

例如，新牛津詞典對意義為繪畫的paint的定義是：“dipict（an object，person，or scene）with paint——用顏料描繪（人、物、景）”[2]1861。對意義為跑步的run的定義是：“move at a speed faster than a walk，never having both or all the feet on the ground at the same time——比走步快的、雙腳或所有腳不同時著地的移動。”[2]1558

二、精美絕倫的漢語翻譯定義

根據(jù)英語詞典“定義”的含義，定義是對一個詞或者某一個概念的確切的描述。漢語“翻譯”是一個詞，自然符合“定義”的規(guī)定。

唐朝的賈彥公有一個“翻譯”定義說：譯即易，謂換易語言使相解也[3]。

賈彥公的翻譯定義空前絕后，妙不可語。他說，翻譯是轉換語言，以便相互理解。

漢語“翻譯”是一個詞，可是“翻譯”這一個詞是一個多義詞，它可以分解成為幾個詞：

第一，“翻譯”指的是行為或者行為過程，相當于英語translate或者translated，translating，比如“他經常翻譯小說。”中的“翻譯”是行為，英語是He always translates novels；“他正在翻譯小說”中的翻譯是行為過程，英語是He is translating a novel.
