Student Tyler Reidy immediately felt comfortable when he arrived at Grebel for his studio audition(試演).“The professors were incredibly welcoming, the students were encouraging and excited to get to know me during my audition process, and Grebel was small enough that I was immediately drawn to the community.”Tyler maintained a strong link to the department through all four years of his university career, and he is now set to graduate this spring with a major in music.

“As I reflect on my four years here at UWaterloo, I truly believe that I’ve been spoiled with the support of my amazing professors, incredible classmates, and small class sizes.”he noted.“I’ve had the chance to perform a graduation concert, conduct and compose an honours thesis(畢業(yè)論文), compose for the on-campus orchestra, perform in a variety of concerts, and gain vast knowledge on all aspects of music.”

Pointing to classes he took, he began to think about music’s effects on the body, and took his music healing(治愈)knowledge to a new level, which led Tyler to a volunteer position at Kids Ability Centre for Child Development. He assisted during musical activities and worked to target specific behavioral and social goals as well as therapy-related(與治療相關(guān)的)goals that included the use of singing and instruments to encourage music-making and socialization.

Now he has been accepted into the Music Therapy Master’s program at Wilfrid Laurier University.“I couldn’t imagine pursuing another field of work,”he explained.“I’ve always enjoyed connecting with people, especially with music, and want to use my love of music to help others. An academic paper published in Nature Human Behaviour on July 1 suggested smart technology is not making people sillier but is, in fact freeing up brain space to allow people to learn more. Authors of the paper said that despite the fierce attack of smart technology that has influenced people’s daily lives, it actually assists people to be excellent rather than become less intelligent.

For example, if a person needs directions for how to get to a nearby stadium to attend a game, without smart technology, he would have to fish out a map, figure out where the stadium is on that map, and then determine a reasonable route from his current location to his destination. However, with smart technology, the person could simply type in the location and have directions, find parking and even pick a place to eat afterward in mere minutes, freeing up room in their brains to intake other information.

The“popular narrative”surrounding smart technology is that it blocks a person’s cognitive(認(rèn)知)abilities such as memory, the paper continued.“And when participants expected information to later be accessible(vs not accessible)on the computer, they were less likely to remember what its content was, but more likely to remember where it could be found. These effects were temporary and they emerged when access to digital technology or information stored inside was available, not when access was unavailable,”the paper continued.

The authors did recognize that long-term use of smart technology did reduce people’s abilities to perform cognitive tasks such as“associations of media multitasking with task switching, temporary memory and attention missing.”However, these impacts were all“relevance, not causal.”

    28. Why does the author give an example in paragraph 2?

    A. To make room for brains.

    B. To compare different suggestions.

    C. To show the way of choosing directions.

    D. To present the strengths of smart technology.

    29.Whatdoestheunderlinedword“emerged”inparagraph3probablymean?

    A. Appeared.

    B. Lasted.

    C. Failed.

    D. Changed.

    30. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to smart technology?

    A. Skeptical.

    B. Objective.

    C. Tolerant.

    D. Supportive.

    31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A. The Popularity of Smart Technology

    B. The Development of Smart Technology

    C. Smart Technology not Making us More Stupid

    D. Smart Technology Influencing our Intelligence Greatly

    D

Extreme heat often brings extreme wildfires, and this year is no exception, with all-time heat waves fueling enormous outbreaks of fires in the western United States and Canada, as well as across the Mediterranean and in Siberia. But the strongest wildfires can have the opposite effect on temperatures, cooling Earth’s surface both regionally and globally.

Dense(濃密的)wildfire smoke can temporarily block sunlight near the ground, causing regional temperatures to drop by several degrees. Wildfire smoke can also have global cooling effects by making clouds in the lower atmosphere more reflective or blocking sunlight in the upper atmosphere, similar to what a volcanic eruption does.

New research on Australia’s 2019~2020 bush fire season pointed to another, potentially far more significant, way that wildfire smoke could cool Earth’s surface. Its effect is far too small to counteract(抵消)human-caused global warming. But with fire seasons growing more intense around the world, the search for answers is growing increasingly urgent.

Smoke particles act as seeds for water vapor to form clouds that are smaller and reflect more sunlight. While smoke tends to rain out of clouds fairly quickly, the Australian bush fire continued for months, pumping more and more cloud-brightening smoke into the atmosphere.“It’s not a big effect, but when you consider the entire South- ern Ocean, it adds up,”one of the researchers says. While this research highlights the cooling effects of smoke in the lower atmosphere, on occasion, wildfire smoke can reach even higher altitudes into the stratosphere(平流層), the layer that starts about 10 miles up. There, it can have additional effects on the climate. Smoke reaches the stratosphere when heat from a powerful wildfire creates an updraft that combines with small drops of water in the atmosphere to generate towering thunderclouds.

However, scientists have only recently begun studying these effects.“We might still be in the initial stage of understanding how large and how important the effects of these wildfires are,”scientists say.

    32. How does wildfire smoke reduce the heat on the earth’s surface?

    A. By absorbing sunlight in the lower atmosphere.

    B. By reflecting sunlight into the atmosphere.

    C. By stopping sunlight near the ground.

    D. By making clouds in the upper atmosphere.

    33. What can we learn about Australian bush fire according to the text?

    A. It caused serious effects than human activities.

    B. It cooled Earth’s surface more efficiently.

    C. It delivered more smoke into the atmosphere.

    D. Its smoke spread over the entire Southern Ocean.

    34. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

    A. The importance of wildfires is completely ignored.

    B. Human’s understanding of wildfires is still limited.

    C. Scientists fully understand the effects of wildfires.

    D. Wildfires are the consequences of global warming.

    35. Where does the text probably come from?

    A. A geographic textbook.

    B. A research report.

    C. A biology magazine.

    D. A science fiction.

    第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題3分,滿分15分)

    根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項,選項中有兩項為多余選項。

The environment around us is not only our home but everything that keeps us alive. Therefore, caring for the environment is something that should be a basic part of us. Our interaction with the environment should be in a way that we use the resources that nature provides, but in a sustainable manner. 36

We only have one earth as our home. Although some of us may take this lightly, it is critical to know that we don’t have anywhere else we can run to. If we spoil what we have here, we will suffer the consequences of our actions. When cutting down all treesfor our short-term goals, we will suffer global warming, lack of rainfall to grow our food, and many other unpleasant situations. 37

Caring for the environment protects the ecosystem and humanity. 38 For example, if we pollute the water bodies with plastic or leaked oil, we kill the species that live there. Therefore, as we produce, consume and dispose of waste materials, we should think of how it will affect the ecosystem.

39 One evident thing is that we only live because nature offers us resources. Whether we want to hear it or not, if nature is gone, we will also disappear with it. Therefore, caring for the environment is a great way to show that we care and appreciate it. Everything that keeps our lives moving comes from nature. 40 If we preserve the environment, then we are giving back to the planet.

    A. Clean environment means healthier lives.

    B. Therefore, if we love our lives, we must love nature.

    C. This is a major reason why we should look after the earth.

    D. Protecting the environment is an excellent way to give back.

    E. Almost all our activities affect the ecosystem in one way or the other.

    F. Here is a guide to what sustainability means and how to practice it daily.

    G. The various things we use come from raw materials we get from forests.
