In Don Quixote, Cervantes refers to Italy as “Italiae” (the plural form of “Italy” in Italian). Such a diverse Italy has always been appreciated by master photographers. Though they differ considerably in the use of color, technique and style, they are all keen on revealing the country’s changing and complex characteristics and traditions, as well as its extremely delicate historical evolution.
The work exhibition “Italiae—From Alinari to the Masters of Contemporary Photography” is going to be held in Chongqing Library from February 28th to March 30th. It is free of charge and open to the public. From Alinari to contemporary master photographers, their works unfold like a scroll, gradually portraying a splendid and vivid Italy.
This exhibition is launched by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Alinari Photography Foundation, and co-hosted by the Consulate-General of Italy in Chongqing and Chongqing Library. More than 75 famous Italian photographers’ works are on show, covering a wide range of fields such as studio photography, canvas, conceptualism, news photography and art studies, and there are also quite a number of collectibles and archives. These works not only record and narrate the historical changes and local customs of Italy for over 160 years from the 19th century to the present, but also showcase to the public a diversified Italy that is rich in history and vitality.
Adriana Lori, Acting Consul-General of Italy in Chongqing, introduced that 2022 was the China-Italy Year of Cultural Exchange and Tourism, and this exhibition was the first cultural event held by the Consulate-General this year. Since June 2021, the exhibition has embarked on a global tour. It has been held in cities including Minsk of Belarus, Saint Petersburg of Russia and Tashkent of Uzbekistan. This time, the exhibition is held in China, enabling a dialogue transcending time and space between past and contemporary photographs.
Ren Jing, Director of Chongqing Library noted that diversity spurred interactions among civilization, which in turn promoted mutual learning and their further development. With this exhibition, friendly cooperation will be closer between Chongqing Library and the Consulate-General of Italy in Chongqing. Books can be good ways for the Italian people to know more about Chongqing’s charm and start a new chapter for China-Italy cultural interactions.
The exhibition is divided into three sections: Landscape, Works, and Faces. Each of them constitutes a virtual geographical, historical, and artistic path that captures, in a multifaceted variety of themes, the mutations of a country in continuous evolution: North and South, city and countryside, work and leisure, tradition and innovation, social history and cultural life. Artist Mario Cresci described this exhibition as a brief compendium of the history of photographic techniques that started from the calotype and arrived at virtual photography in games.
This exhibition can also mean a language that grasps geographical diversity, plumbs the depths of history, and penetrates the creases of the territory. According to Rita Scartoni, one of the curators of the exhibition, an unusual visual narrative is built. Different viewpoints, techniques, and subjects are integrated, trying to create a dialogue between historical and contemporary photography. Thus, assonances and contrasts are generated in terms of form and content. The viewers are invited to take a fresh look at familiar images - the very images that have helped to build the visual identity of Italy - and to discern in them unexpected correspondences and suggestions.
