Tyler Kellogg drove more than 3,000 miles last year. His goal is to help as many people as he can.
Tyler Kellogg calls himself a long time do-gooder, and last summer he really did a lot of good. After collecting together $2,000 and using his car as a sleeping space, the 21-year-old college student hit the road. His goal was to do random (任意的) acts of kindness for 100 strangers.
He drove 1,600 miles, from his parents house in Adams Center, New York, to the Florida Keys, then back again. “The first person I helped was a person fixing a boat lift on a lake in Oneida, New York,” Kellogg remembers. “I was shaking when I asked if he needed a hand.” What if he thought Kellogg was crazy? “When he said, ‘Can you help me get this lift into the water? I knew everything was going to be fine.”
He helped a policeman fix a downed barricade (路障) in Washington, DC and spread many yards of mulch (林地覆蓋物) in Maryland and North Carolina. And somewhere outside Atlanta, he met a man who was crying because his wife had recently died and he had no one to talk to. “For three hours we sat in his garden,” Kellogg says. “When I left, he said, ‘Thank you. I realize now that my life will go on.”
In 55 days, Kellogg helped 115 strangers and made an exciting discovery. “You dont have to have much money,” he says. “You just have to ask people, ‘How can I help?”

As most people know, sandstorms have swept across some cities and areas around the world, polluting the air and disturbing (攪亂) daily lives of human beings. People look dirty and suffer many kinds of illnesses, such as breath difficulty. The sandstorm is such a serious problem that it has not only weakened the industrial and agricultural development but also caused a lot of trouble to the living conditions of people.
Therefore, effective measures should be taken as soon as possible to stop its happening. So how should we deal with the frightening sandstorms?
Some experts offer practical advice as follows: For one thing, more money ought to be put into tree planting and forest protection in order to keep more water on the Earth. For another, governments of all countries should make laws on environment protection. For example, banning the use of throw-away chopsticks and punishing illegal tree cutting. Scientists should also study and find ways to lower the grade of its destruction and to improve the environment. As for some schools, education about sandstorms should be spread properly and timely to make more and more people attach great importance to this problem.
How people look forward to sunny days with soft wind touching their faces now and forever! The golden days can come back so long as we try our best to protect the natural environment from today on. As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, do people remember less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know how the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夾). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互記憶)”.
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesnt mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
32. Why does the passage begin with the two questions?
A. To introduce the main topic.
B. To show the authors attitude.
C. To describe how to use the Internet.
D. To explain how to store information.
33. What can we learn about the first experiment?
A. The two groups remembered the information equally well.
B. Sparrows team typed the information into a computer.
C. Group 1 did not try to remember the formation.
D. Group 2 did not understand the information.
34. In the experiment about transactive memory, people ___ .
A. keep the information in mind
B. change the quantity of information
C. organize information like a computer
D. remember how to find the information
35. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrows research?
A. We are using memory differently.
B. We are becoming more intelligent.
C. We have poorer memories than before.
D. We need a better way to access information.
