The Stockholm-based Swedish Academy announced on Thursday that American poet Louise Glück has won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature.
The Academy praised Glücks“unmistakable poetic voice, that with simple beauty makes individual existence universal.” Glücks works are known for exploring personal loss and tragedy (悲?。?, especially in family life. She also draws on her own experiences, as well as subjects related to modern life and nature.
The Academys permanent secretary Mats Malm said he had spoken to Glück just before making the public announcement. “The message came as a surprise, but a welcome one as far as I could tell,”Malm told reporters.
The 77-year-old Glück is a professor of English at Yale University. She had no immediate public comment. Glück joins a handful of American poets who have received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Glück is also one of the few women honored with the literature prize. Only 16 women have won the Literature Prize since the Nobel awards began in 1901.
The work that first brought Glück wide attention was a collection of poems called“Firstborn,”published in 1968. From there, she soon became recognized“as one of the most outstanding poets in American contemporary literature,”the Nobel literature committee said. Anders Olsson is chairman of the literature committee. He described Glücks voice as“straightforward and uncompromising”, a signal that“this poet wants to be understood.”But her writing is also“full of humor and biting wit,” Olsson said.
Glücks poetry collections include“Descending Figure,” “Ararat”and“The Triumph of Achilles,”which was published in 1985 and won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Glück was also awarded an American Pulitzer Prize for poetry and was named Poet Laureate of the United States in 2003.
Drawing comparisons with other writers, the committee said Glück was like 19th-century American poet Emily Dickinson, in her“severity and unwillingness to accept simple tenets (原則)of faith”.

There are many online learning platforms in the market that serve millions of people. Universities are also giving admission to online courses under computer science, engineering, mathematics, business, art, and personal development.
They show theres a huge need from people to learn online. The reason for this and rapid growth of the market with a lot of platform choices may be the rapid change of the world. Darren Shimkus, president of an online learning company, says,“The biggest question for learners is to figure out what skills are new, what they can do to compete best in the global market. Were in a world thats changing so quickly that skills that were important just three or four years ago are no longer useful. People are puzzled and dont know what they should be learning.”At this moment, online learning is becoming a huge catalyzer(催化劑)for people and companies to help get used to this rapid change in the world.
All the online learning companies have a large amount of user information which enables those platforms to use machine learning. Machine learning can personalize the content for each learner. For example, when a student repeatedly struggles with a question at the course, the platform can adjust the e-learning content to provide more detailed information to help the student.
Another strength is that people can arrange their schedules according to their convenience. And online courses prove a more affordable choice than traditional ones. Sometimes course materials, such as textbooks, are free for use online.
Its a fact that online learning will undoubtedly replace land-based learning in the future. Mobile platforms have given?admission to more people to benefit from online learning, and this has created rich information, then machine learning has given personalized solutions to the course content with using the rich information.

A new study has identified social connection as the strongest protective factor(因素)against depression. Significantly, results showed that even people with a genetic vulnerability(易受傷)to depression and those who have experienced early life hardship are less likely to develop depression if they have regular meaningful contact with other people.
Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide and is treated with varying degrees of success using a range of different cures. Yet the authors of this study insist that the condition is still poorly understood, as a full investigation into the risk factors for depression has never been conducted.
To improve this, the researchers looked at data from 123,794 adults. Specifically, the authors examined information relating to the adults who displayed no symptoms of depression at the beginning, but who went on to develop clinical depression six to eight years later. This enabled the researchers to identify 106 lifestyle factors that appear to influence a persons risk of developing depression. They include sleep patterns, exercise habits, social connections, media use, diet, and environmental conditions.
Next, the team used a statistical analysis method to determine which of these risk factors had a causal relationship to depression and which were simply correlated with depression. Only a few of the original 106 lifestyle factors were found to be genuine risk factors, with social connection being the most significant.“The most evident factor was frequency of believing in others, but also visits with family and friends, all of which highlighted the important protective effect of social connection,”explained study author Jordan Smoller, associate chief for research at the Massachusetts General Hospitals Department of Psychiatry.
Meanwhile, a tendency to take daytime naps was also found to increase the risk of depression, although the authors say more research is needed to prove this. Similarly, the amount of time spent watching television appears to partly determine a persons chances of suffering from depression, yet the researchers say this may not have anything to do with screen time as watching TV could just be a substitute for being sedentary(久坐不動(dòng)的), which has previously been identified as a risk factor for depression.
32. Why did the researchers carry out the study?
A. To explore the causes of depression.
B. To work out symptoms of depression.
C. To find out more ways to cure depression.
D. To prove the previous views about depression.
33. According to Jordan Smoller, which is the best way to deal with depression?
A. Keeping a balanced diet.
B. Living in the countryside.
C. Reading alone in the library.
D. Participate in birthday parties.
34. What does the underlined word“this”in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Taking daytime naps.
B. Suffering from depression.
C. A substitute for being sedentary.
D. The amount of time spent watching TV.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Depression is a major problem around the world.
B. Life sufferings dont necessarily bring about depression.
C. Depression can be prevented by associating with others.
D. There are many cases of successful treatment for depression.

Sophie was dressed and all ready for her very first dance recital. When she started dance class last year, she didnt know about the recital. She heard people talk about the recital but she didnt know what it was. The recital was a chance for all of the parents and grandparents to see the dance students dance. It was at the high school every year and Sophie was going to dance on the stage in front of everyone. She did not like the thought of that. It scared her.
Yesterday she practiced her dance for the first time on the stage. There were only a few moms watching so it wasnt too bad. Everything went so well that she prayed the formal recital would be performed successfully. But the thought of dancing in front of lots of people tonight was really scary.
“All ready to go?”Mom asked in a gentle voice.
“Yes. I guess,”Sophie said, her head drooping(下垂)down.
“You dont sound like you are ready. Whats wrong?”
“I dont know. I dont feel so good. Im kind of afraid.”
Mom sat on the edge of Sophies bed.“Remember yesterday when you practiced and I was right in the front row? You did just fine!”
“But today there will be so many people!”Sophie muttered to herself with tears almost rolling down.
“When you go out on the stage, you just look right where I was sitting yesterday. I will be in that same seat. You just look at me and it will be just like yesterday! Lets go!”
“What about the rest of the family?”Sophie asked, looking at her Mom, full of expectation.
“They are coming in the other car. We have to be there a little early.”
Sophie thought about what her mom said all the way to the high school. She kept reminding herself to be confident and tried her best to be calm. Mom was always right, but Sophie wasnt sure about this time. She still hated the thought of dancing in front of all those people.

參考范文
Finally, it was time for her to dance. Welcomed warmly by the audience present, Sophie stepped on the stage nervously. While dancing to the music, she glanced quickly at the front row, only to find the seat empty.“Where is Mom? She promised to be there!”So anxious was Sophie that she almost forgot her next dance move. However, she adjusted herself in no time, contained her uneasiness, and continued her performance with her eyes searching for Mom.
There Mom was!Right in the front row!Mom smiled at her and waved hands towards her. Overwhelmed with joy and delight, Sophie followed the other girls and danced confidently as yesterday. The rest of the family and other viewers stood up and applauded as soon as the recital ended. As the light dimmed, Sophie ran off the stage and rushed to her Mom,“I make it, Mom. Thanks for your support.”Mom laughed, hugging Sophie tightly, “ Sweetie, it is yourself that you need to be grateful to. I am so proud of you!”
