Do Whales Sleep?
Whales (鯨魚) are mammals (哺乳動(dòng)物), so in many ways, they are just like human beings. The most important difference is that humans and whales live in different environments and whales have a special respiratory (呼吸的) system that enables them to stay underwater for several minutes without breathing oxygen. For this reason, they are said to be voluntary breathers. That is, because of whales underwater environment, they must be conscious breathers. They think about every breath they take and come up to the surface of the water to breathe through blowholes on top of their heads.
What is outstanding about whales is the way they can sleep. While all mammals sleep, whales cannot afford to become unconscious (無意識(shí)的) for long because they may drown. The only way they can sleep is by remaining partially conscious. It is believed that only one hemisphere (大腦半球) of the whales brain sleeps at a time, so they rest but are never completely asleep. They can do so most probably near the surface so that they can come up for air easily.
(? ? )21. Whales are like fish in the way they breathe.
(? ? )22. Whales dont sleep at all.
(? ? )23. Whales must swim to the surface of the water to breathe.
(? ? )24. Whales can breathe through their skins.

Amanda Kitts is one of “tomorrows people” people who have artificial (人工的) body parts. She has a bionic (電子操控的) arm.
Now, Kitts runs a day-care center. Children run up to her happily as she comes into the classroom. She bends over to talk with a small girl. As she bends, Kitts puts her hands on her knees. For most people, this would be easy. However, just a few years ago, this was impossible for Kitts.
In 2006, Kitts was in a car accident. A truck crushed (擠壞) her left arm and the doctor had to cut it off. “I was angry, sad, depressed. I just couldnt accept it,” she says. But then she heard about a new technique that could use the remaining nerves (神經(jīng)) in her shoulder to connect an artificial arm.
In a difficult operation, a doctor moved Kittss nerves to different areas of her upper-arm muscles. For months, the nerves grew. Millimeter by millimeter, they moved deeper into their new homes. “After three months I started feeling little tingles and twitches (刺痛和抽搐),” she said. And a month later, she got her first bionic arm. A research engineer worked with Kitts to make the computer programs match her real movements more and more closely.
Today, Kittss arm is great, but its not yet perfect. She wants feeling in her hands. For example, she needs to feel whether something is rough or smooth. She also needs feeling to do one of her favorite things—drink coffee. “The problem with a paper coffee cup is that my hand will close until it gets a solid grip,” she says. One time at a coffee shop, her hand kept closing until it crushed the cup. But Kitts says positively, “One day Ill be able to feel things with it, and clap my hands...to the songs my kids are singing.”
(? ? )26. What is the difference between Kitts and normal people?
A. She has a bionic arm.
B. She can bend.
C. She can put her hands on her knees.
(? ? )27. Kitts got her first bionic arm _______ after the difficult operation.

(? ? )28. Kitts is able to _______ with her bionic hand.

Some scientists say that animals in the ocean are increasingly threatened (威脅) by noise pollution caused by human beings. 31. ________ It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions (爆炸), ocean drilling, and ship engines. 32. ________ These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves.
Decibels? (分貝) measured? (測(cè)量) in water are different from those measured on land . 33. ________ In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety-five would have the same effect (效果).
Some scientists have planned to set a noise limit (限度) of one hundred and twenty decibels in oceans. They have found that noises at that level can frighten whales.
A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that louder noises can seriously hurt some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whales ability to exchange information and find their way. 34. ________ The explosions had caused their ears to bleed.
Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds disagree to a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research. 35. ________ However, many scientists think that noise is a greater danger than they believed. Its time for them to take action to help ocean animals.

How do you feel when you have to make a speech in front of the class or when you go to a birthday party? Do you get really shy?
Shyness means feeling nervous or frightened when youre around other people. Experts have found that more than 80 percent middle school students feel afraid to be the center of attention. Some kids are born shy. Some become shy later because of their life experiences.
Its OK if it takes you a while to feel yourself again when you go to a new place or meet new people. In fact, everybody gets a little shy sometimes. Its just a cause of how much.
Most people have red faces and talk in broken sentences when they get shy. But some become so shy that they wont go to a restaurant because they are too nervous to order and pay for the food. Some are afraid of meeting new people, so they seldom go outside. This kind of shyness can be bad for a person.
If being shy doesnt stop you from doing something you want to do, it isnt a very big problem. Some experts say shy people are cleverer because they think more and talk less. Shy people are also good at working with others because they think more for other people. Some great people in history were shy, too.
You see, being shy isnt all bad.
But remember not to let good opportunities pass by just because of it! If you have to sing a song at a birthday party or practise your spoken English in front of others, just do it!Theres nothing to be afraid of.
