《朱莉的狼群》（節(jié)選十）

The Avaliks and Nukas met where Avalik borders faded away at a National Petroleum Reserve outpost. The activities of humans had wiped out the wolf borders. Oil and machinery held this territory within the Avalik home range.

They came toward each other with fur rising on their bodies， making them enormous warriors. Kapu eyed Low Wind. Low Wind eyed Kapu. Kapu scratched his signature on the ground with hard strokes of his claws. Low Wind placed his signature on an oily piece of ground， where it could be plainly seen and dreaded. Kapu lifted his leg and scent marked the top of a tundra grass blade. “Come no farther，” he said.

Now that Kapus attention was totally focused on Low Wind， Raw Bones saw his opportunity. With a quick movement he knocked Kapu toward the enemy. Startled， Low Wind attacked Kapu， and so did Raw Bones. Instantly， loyal Zing was upon Raw Bones. Head and chest above him， he bossed him to the ground and pinned him there. Zing had had enough of this wolf too.

The alpha fight began. Kapu and Low Wind mouthed each others shoulders and rose on hind feet， each trying to lift his head higher than the others. The growling and snarling was terrifying. Both wolf packs watched in silence. In the midst of the fight Sweet Fur Amy signaled Aaka， and the two sped into the middle of the Nukas. They encircled two adolescents and herded them behind the Avalik lines.

Low Wind， momentarily distracted by the departure of his young adults， turned his head， and in that second Kapu rolled him to the ground. Stiff-legged， he walked to a battered oil barrel and shot his scent higher than ever before. Low Wind responded to this statement of victory by pressing his ears against his head and lowering his tail. His face was smooth and expressionless. Kapus eyes were wide， his tail high， his fur and ears erect. He was magnificent to see. The two leaders looked at each other; then Low Wind signaled his adolescents to return and walked away.

The young Nukas did not move. Kapu， the victor， had told them to stay. Low Wind stepped forward to get them. Kapu lifted the fur on his back and， scratching the ground， drew a new border. He gave Low Wind the oily territory he was on， then turned and walked off with the two strong Nukas. With them in the pack Raw Bones would not be needed.

The rival packs trotted apart. Not far from the battleground Kapu whimpered his joy， sat down， and threw back his head. He howled. His pack howled. The Nukas howled. The wolf music continued until each individual in each pack felt that the business of the day had been concluded satisfactorily.

阿瓦里克河狼群和努卡河狼群碰面了。地點是一處國家石油儲備基地附近，在這里阿瓦里克河狼群的邊界逐漸模糊。人類活動抹掉了狼群的邊界。石油和機械設備占據了阿瓦里克河狼群家園內的這片區(qū)域。

兩群狼互相靠近，身上的毛發(fā)直豎，讓他們看起來都像是魁梧的斗士。卡普盯著低風。低風盯著卡普?？ㄆ沼么钟驳淖ψ釉诘厣吓俪龊圹E作為標記。低風的標記畫在浸有石油的地面上，特別顯眼也讓人害怕?？ㄆ仗鹜龋趦鲈萑~頂端做了氣味標記?！安辉S往前走了。”卡普說。

現(xiàn)在卡普的注意力完全集中到了低風身上，生骨看到了機會。生骨猛地一下把卡普撞向低風。低風吃了一驚，開始攻擊卡普，生骨也攻擊卡普。對卡普忠誠的津立刻撲向生骨。津的頭和胸部壓著生骨，喝令他待在地上，并把他緊緊按住。津對生骨的忍耐也到了極限。

頭狼之間的戰(zhàn)斗開始了。卡普和低風互相咬住對方的肩膀，直立起來，都想讓自己的頭高過對方。他們的嘶吼聲讓人心驚。兩個狼群都靜靜地觀戰(zhàn)。戰(zhàn)事正酣，香毛艾米朝阿卡使了個眼色，她們沖到努卡河狼群中間，把兩只幼狼圍了起來，驅趕到阿瓦里克河狼群這邊。

看到自己狼群的幼狼被帶走，低風一瞬間走神，轉頭觀望，就在這一刻，卡普把低風摔倒在地上?？ㄆ胀ζ鹜龋叩揭粋€破爛的油桶旁，高高地撒下一泡尿算作標記。這泡尿撒得比以往都要高。面對這樣的勝利宣言，低風把耳朵緊緊貼住腦袋，尾巴也低垂下來。低風面色平靜，毫無表情?？ㄆ针p目圓睜，尾巴高翹，毛發(fā)和耳朵豎直?？ㄆ湛瓷先ネL極了。兩只頭狼相互看了看。低風示意那兩只幼狼回來，然后走開了。

兩只努卡河幼狼并沒有動?？ㄆ眨^狼之戰(zhàn)的勝利者，讓他們留下來。低風走上前來要帶他們走。卡普豎起背上的毛發(fā)，爪子在地上刨出了新的邊界。他把自己站的那一塊兒油跡斑斑的地方讓給了低風，然后轉身帶著兩只強壯的努卡河幼狼離開。狼群里有了這兩只幼狼，都不需要生骨了。

兩個爭地盤的狼群各自走開。離開戰(zhàn)場不遠，卡普高興地哼叫起來，坐在地上，仰頭嚎叫。整個阿瓦里克河狼群開始嚎叫。努卡河狼群也在嚎叫。狼群合奏持續(xù)不斷，直到兩個狼群中的每頭狼都覺得當天的正事已圓滿完成。

【背景知識】兩個相鄰的狼群發(fā)生了地盤之爭?？ㄆ针m然取勝，也有僥幸的成分。香毛艾米和阿卡間接幫助了卡普，她們吸引了低風的注意力，讓他走神，才有一敗。阿瓦里克河狼群還趁機擄走了努卡河狼群的兩只強壯幼狼，可謂大獲全勝。此處頭狼爭斗的場面讓人身臨其境。

【第一段】原文第一句中有一個狀語從句，譯文分為兩句，第二句添加了“地點”一詞，而且把原文的第二句合并到譯文第二句中?？梢娮g文的句法不一定完全照搬原文，可以根據語義邏輯來分分合合。

【第二段】第一句開頭原文的代詞在譯文中替換為名詞。短語hard strokes of his claws有兩重意思，一是狼爪粗硬，二是地上的痕跡粗硬。譯文表達了第一種意思，第二種意思隱含在句子中。倒數(shù)第二句的原文是委婉語：lifted his leg and scent marked其實指抬腿撒尿。譯文也保留了原文的委婉方式。

【第三段】原文的二、三、四、五句都使用了狀語提前的句式，形成排比，很有特色?？上е形娜绻瓨颖３诌@種句式會顯得翻譯腔。譯文沒有保留第三句的原文句式（立刻……），而是把狀語融入譯文句中。這一段中也有幾處原文的代詞被替換為名詞。

【第四段】兩個名詞growling和snarling意思相近，譯文就合譯為“嘶吼聲”。香毛艾米詭計多端，她的行為間接幫助了卡普，也為族群帶來了新生力量。

【第五段】第二句有兩個難點。其一是stiff-legged，字面義是腿很僵硬，但在上下文中指卡普是獲勝一方，腿挺直，有趾高氣揚的意味。接下來shot his scent higher than ever before仍然是委婉語，譯文將其明晰化為“高高地撒下一泡尿算作標記”，而且把higher than ever before單列出來，用外位法翻譯為“這泡尿撒得比以往都要高”，借此再現(xiàn)原文中強調的效果。第四句中的his face was smooth是翻譯難點，因為中文里不會說狼有“流暢的/光滑的臉”，譯文將其轉譯為“面色平靜”。

【第六段】極地狼群的生存不易，養(yǎng)育一只幼狼更是費盡心力?？ㄆ漳軓膶κ帜抢飺尩絻芍荒贻p強壯的幼狼，算是收獲頗豐。

【第七段】原文中的二、三、四句是排比句，譯文也基本保持了原文的修辭法。最后一句中原文的the wolf music（狼群演奏的音樂）如果直譯，中文無法接受，譯文只能稍作變通。

【小結】該選段以場面和動作描寫為主，英文句式多變，有排比，有復雜句。翻譯時可以根據具體情況調整中文句式，該分就分，該合則合，在考慮再現(xiàn)原文修辭效果的同時，要兼顧中文表達的合理與通順。
