Many cities offer public bikes for people to ride. This is a good way to solve traffic problems in cities and protect the environment at the same time.
New York starts a new bike-sharing program. The program provides lots of public bikes for people. But it has a special rule: the bikes are only for people less than 260 pounds. “The user of a public bike shouldnt be over 260 pounds, because the weight is too heavy for the bike to carry,” explains the New York Post, a local newspaper.
The leaders of the program think the rule is very necessary. They say that many bike factories suggest they should do so. They think it will be much safer if fat people dont ride bikes.
However, many people are against this rule. They think everyone has the right to ride a public bike. “Many fat people want to lose weight by riding bikes. They should be allowed to do that,” says a 20-year-old student. “But the new rule doesnt give them the chance.”
Many people say that 260 pounds wont break a bike, and some owners of bike shops agree with that.
Others say that the rule wont be successful, because there are so many fat people in this city.
