“Is the star on TV a male or female?”That question has been frequently asked as one male star after another appears on TV looking like a woman. And it has resulted in some reactions as shown by the popularity of a WeChat article titledLet's get rid of the male stars with femaleappearances. The article blames feminine males for “weakening the spirit of the society” and “l(fā)osing the courage of the nation”. “Where is our future if too many of our young people try to look like women?”,it asked.
The exact reading times of the article is unknown because the WeChat reading countonly shows “Above 100,000”.However,judging from the more than 2,500 “l(fā)ike”s it has won; it must have been read at least a million times, with more reading records of reposted versions on other platforms.
However, Sun Jiashan, a researcher at Chinese National Academy of Arts, does not think the feminine male stars have a negative effect on society.“They are still far from becoming the main current cultural trend in society.Just have a look at how much criticism they receive online”, he wrote, “Besides, we should not set male and female aesthetic(審美的)standards against each other.” Yang Yi, a popular observer, also expressed his objection to the “Get rid of” article.“I dislike males in female appearances. For that reason,I have even given up the habit of watching TV because there are so many such figures on the screen.Yet I think that is their choice and their right.”
In a comment posted on the public WeChat account,China Daily also said it is a personal choice how one dresses, and there might be capital trying to hype the whole thing up.“By doing so they are exploiting the phenomenon, while what we should do is to show courtesy to it,” it said.Thepaper.cnalso noticed that, “Certain entertainment companies under the controlofcapitalhype up the phenomenon so as to make it look like more popular than it actually is.That might mislead children.”
On its new media platform,People's Daily also published a comment saying appearance was a personal choice and people should not use bad words against men with feminine appearances. “It is naturalto feeldisgusted atcapitalcontrolled speculation that intentionally mixes males with females. But please,do not insult the males with feminine appearances, because they have the right to choose. We hope every child, male or female, will grow up healthily, be brave, and have a sense of responsibility.”

近日,李華所在的班級(jí)在課外閱讀中閱讀了來自The Guardian上的一篇報(bào)道Face time:Is makeup for men the next big beauty trend,并展開了激烈的討論。文章部分內(nèi)容如下:
For the last century, makeup has been mostly used by females, while men have continued to go in a natural way.But that may be changing,as brands from Chanel to Tom Ford launch male cosmetic lines(化妝品系列).
Tom Ford and Chanel have launched a men's makeup recently.Male cosmetics still make up less than 1%of the$465bn global beauty market, although 15%of UK men under 45 bought makeup in 2016.
As with the boom in female beauty, the charge is being led by ordinary teenagers making videos in their bedrooms.James Charles from upstateNew York was16when he launched his first makeup program on YouTube.By the age of 18,Charles had gained 8.5 million subscribers and become the first man to model for makeup brand CoverGirl.
In the UK,the most famous male beauty vlogger (視頻博客主)is Gary Thompson, who has had campaigns with L'ORéAL and Superdrug. He started wearing makeup because of bad skin, but now loves the way it makes him feel.
Both Thompson and Charles are modellike, and their makeup looks are full-on and feminine. As Thompson says, “Makeup connects with queer culture—it's such a powerful form of expression.”

3.嘗試寫作
Different perspectives of beauty
Not all countries feel the same about beauty. In fact, cultures around the world have different ideas of what is beautiful. Some cultures in Africa, for example, do not celebrate thinness the way Americans do.This is most often seen as a sign of wealth and fertility, whereas being skinny is not.In Brazil, women want to appear fit and toned. In both Asia and Africa, skin lightening has risen in popularity.Korea,Thailand, and Japan have all been known for champion skincare products that smooth and brighten.
Studying different cultures and their attitudes toward something as subjective as beauty allows us to widen our awareness of what's going on.It reminds us that as crazy as this world is—how wrapped up we all get in beauty, body image, and ideas of perfection—we are all individuals. We all have our own perceptions of the world around us.With regards to beauty,I always say to do what makes you happy and what makes you feel confident.Don't do it because it's a trend or societal expectation;live with intention and open mindedness.
