Open House is a general invitation to members of the community to see what is inside. As a perennial challenge presented to designers of interior spaces, attracting people, and more importantly, retaining them—especially those who do not come with a specific purpose, such as catching a flight or attending a cultural or religious event—require a confluence of contributing factors and a host of interrelated decisions that speak to human desires. Open House, a selfdescribed village of spaces, including a bookstore, bars, lounges, restaurants, a children’s zone, coworking spaces, pop-ups, stores, and an art tower. It is an integrated lifestyle space that cater to various needs, and its dramatic juxtaposition of double height ceilings and amenities built on a human scale makes it a space where people want to work and stay for long periods of time. Instead of the box-like retail spaces that have defined most post-war indoor shopping malls, Open House’s businesses coalesce around the bookstore. As far as the eyes can see, walls and horizontal shelves of books, all made of wood, outline the contiguous twostorey space appointed with sofas and chairs along the passages. Seating has also been integrated with some bookcases and book display cabinets in the middle.Visitors are free to browse, or sit down to enjoy a good read, or perhaps to enjoy a coあee or a meal when they feel like refueling. Thanks to this library setting, which gives Open House its signature unhurried atmosphere, visitors are encouraged to stay longer and patronise other establishments at their own pace. In this village of books, shops, eateries, visitors do not need to venture far to spend an entire leisurely afternoon. The immense book collection of more than 20,000 titles for sale and on display will keep voracious readers content, and with 14 food and beverage outlets to choose from, ranging from Japanese to Italian, and from gourmet coffee to vegan food, virtually every customer’s taste, both in food and reading, are accommodated.Occupants of Open House co-working space, dubbed the “co-thinking space”, will not only command a view of Bangkok, but they will also enjoy the atmosphere and many amenities oあered by Open House.
