    Stars who made history

The sounds and messages musicians release through their art form can affect peoples lives in ways that not even a world leader can. The following are some of the most important musicians of all time.

    The king of rock‘nroll

Who started the tradition of making pop music? It was surely Elvis Presley.

In 1945, as a 10-year-old, he performed a popular song while standing on a chair so he could reach the microphone. He was competing with other kids and he came fifth. Actually, the road to fame for Elvis was long and hard. Anyway, he created a style of music that put many of the musical forms together and caught the mood of the times.

    Worlds biggest bands

The Beatles were on top of the pop scene in the 1960s. The leaders of the band, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, had such talent that they always wanted to try something new. And since they were so successful, they had the freedom to do what they wanted. This means that The Beatlesrecords are very varied and original. Its also the main reason why musicians have admired and respected them.

    The king of pop

The late 1970s and early 1980s saw another big change in the world of pop music — the birth of the music video. Michael Jackson was the big star of this time and became the most successful black artist. He broke down the barriers that had existed between races and styles of music. Also he shows off his great dancing and strong sense of fashion in his video. He was as much a video artist as a music artist.

    21. Why did many musicians looked up to The Beatles?

    A. The leaders have a gift for composition.

    B. They enjoyed great popularity for a time.

    C. They set a new standard for popular music.

    D. Their music showed freedom, originality and variation.

    22. Who is a great video artist according to the article?

    A. Elvis Presley B. John Lennon

    C. Michael Jackson D. Paul McCartney

    23. What is the authors purpose in writing the text?

    A. To help the young set up a goal in life.

    B. To introduce some influential musicians.

    C. To compare between several popular musicians.

    D. To describe the changes musicians have brought.

    (B)

A friend who was upset wrote me a letter a few weeks ago. His life was full of problems. His heart was full of worries. He was low on hope. He ended his letter to me with this question:“We cant really change this crazy world we live in, can we?”I answered him immediately and started my own letter with these words:“Yes, we most certainly can!”endprint

I can still remember one of the first times someone changed my world. She was the music teacher at my elementary school, the guitarist at our church, and a family friend.

I was fond of her and wanted to impress her more than anything. I had no talent at any instrument, however, and my singing while enthusiastic was quite awful.

One day she let me try playing her guitar. I did my best but could only stumble along. When I was done I put my head down. “I guess I am not very good,”I told her. She looked at me with her kind eyes, smiled, and said: “We are all good at something. You just need to find out what you are good at. Then you can share it with the world.”

Those simple words changed me. They planted a seed in my soul that continues to grow to this day. They made me realize that I had something to give to others. I had something inside of me that was good and that could change this world for the better. I just had to find it, bring it out and share it. And that is what I have tried to do all of the years since that fateful day.

Can you change the world? Yes you can! You can change it and make it better every single day of your life. You can change it one choice, one person, and one kind act at a time. All you have to do is share your goodness. All you have to do is live your love. Make your love great then!Live well!Do good! Change the world!

    24. How would the authors friend feel about the world?

    A. Its full of hope. B. Its unchangeable.

    C. Its beautiful. D. Its unexpected.

    25. Why did the author put his head down?

    A. He wanted to impress his music teacher.

    B. He wanted to play another song.

    C. He was upset about his performance.

    D. He was worried about his performance.

    26. What does the underlined word“that”in Paragraph 5 refer to?

    A. Finding and sharing his advantages with the world.

    B. Realizing he has something expensive to share.

    C. Changing the world entirely.

    D. Planting a seed in his soul.

    27. What does the author mean to tell us?

    A. Life consists of every single day.

    B. Your love is the greatest thing.

    C. You can change everything in the world.

    D. The world can be better because of you.

Kayaking instructor Naude Dreyer was driving along a beach when he spotted something moving on the sand.

Getting close to it, he realized it was a young Benguela dolphin(海豚). The animal had washed on Paaltjies Beach near the Namibian city of Walvis Bay.endprint

“He was moving a bit and I immediately knew he was alive ... and immediately stopped to help him out,”he told Fairfax Media.“I was just doing what was the right thing to do. I couldnt leave him there.”

As his passenger filmed him, Mr Dreyer picked up the dolphin, walked into the sea, and gently lowered it into the waves where it swam off (游走) to safety.

“I was really happy,” he said. “I really wasnt sure at first it was going to happen or not. You never know why these guys are on the beach; theyve been quite active in the area quite lately... ”

Later that day he posted the video on the Facebook page of his business, saying: “Its not clear how he ended up on there in the first place. After a quick assessment and measurements, I attempted to get him swimming again. I was not very hopeful, but as soon as he got into water and realized where he was and he took off like a bullet(子彈). Nice. Ill do a drive past the same area again later just to make sure he hasnt returned again.”

By the next morning the video had been viewed over two million times, with many commenters praising his actions. When some questioned whether he should have alerted animal rescue authorities rather than dealing with it himself, Mr Dreyer replied: “Theres no real authorities around here, regarding that. Itll take a long time for authorities to get there, and he would definitely not have made it. Hes right next to the beach. It was in my capacity (能力) to put him back in the sea, so I wasnt going to leave him there.”

For two women in the United Kingdom, mysterious vision problems that happened only at night or early in the morning turned out to have a rather harmless cause: looking at a smartphone in the dark.endprint

In the first case, a 22-year-old woman told her eye doctor that she had trouble seeing out of her right eye at night while she was in bed. These episodes happened multiple times a week for a year. Each time, she said she could only see the outlines of objects with her right eye, although her vision was fine in her left eye, and in both eyes the following day.

In the second case, a 40-year-old woman told doctors that she couldn't see out of one eye when she woke up in the early morning, before sunrise. This vision problem lasted about 15 minutes, and happened on and off for six months, the report said.

In both cases, doctors later discovered that these vision problems happened only after the women had viewed their smartphone for several minutes, while lying on their side in bed.

The doctors assumed that these problems happened because the patients, without realizing it, were looking at their phone with just one eye, with the other eye blocked by a pillow when they were lying down. In this situation, one eye (blocked by the pillow) becomes adapted to the dark, while the other eye (looking at the smartphone) is adapted to the light, the doctors said. When the smartphone is turned off, the light-adapted eye is perceived(認為) to be“blind,”until it also adjusts to the dark, the doctors said.

The doctors also tried their own experiment, looking at their smartphones with one eye in the dark, and found that their vision was considerably reduced in one eye, and took several minutes to recover.

    32. What cause the two womens vision problems?

    A. Long hours of playing with their smartphones.

    B. A look at a smartphone in the dark.

    C. The sunshine in the morning.

    D. The darkness at night.

    33. What can we learn from the two cases?

    A. Age has an influence on peoples vision.

    B. People should not view their smartphones in bed.

    C. The 22-year-old woman could see normally during the day.

    D. The 40-year-old woman solved her vision problem finally.

    34. What actually happens to the “blind” eye according to the doctors?

    D. It takes time to adapt to the dark.

    B. It takes time to adapt to the light.

    C. It becomes adapted to the dark.

    A. Its blocked by a pillow.

    35. What is the text mainly about?

    A. Playing with smartphones in the dark causes“blindness”.

    B. Darkness caused two womans mysterious vision problems.endprint

    C. Doctors discovered a new theory on“Blindness”.

    D. Vision Problems can recover naturally.

When you miss class, the work can start to pile up quickly. 36 But dont panic. You can talk to your teachers and friends about what you missed. Then, make a plan for handling your homework. Here are some tips for you to talk to your teachers and friends about what you missed so as to catch up on missed schoolwork quickly.

37 You never know when an illness or family emergency will happen. However, if this absence is planned, let all your teachers and the school administration know ahead of time. That way, they can get make-up work to you as soon as possible.

Communicate with your teacher after unexpected absences. Stay after class to talk with your teacher face to face, or head to their office during your free time. Explain the situation. 38 If youve missed several days, its a good idea to email your teacher instead of waiting to talk in person.

Be honest if the missed work wasnt absence-related. 39 In cases like these, its important to be honest with your teacher about the situation. Explain why you missed the work and tell them youre ready to work hard to get back on track.

Talk to friends about what you missed. Your friends can offer you information about everything you missed. Talking to students is as helpful as communicating with your teacher. 40

    A. Therefore, you should do both.

    B. All the homework can be pretty terrible.

    C. Let your teacher know of your absence in advance, if possible.

    D. Take note of any rules your teacher has about missed homework.

    E. Let them know youre trying your best to catch up, and ask what you missed.

    F. Sometimes, you might forget to complete the homework or simply feel too tired.

    G. Keep in mind that your teacher probably wont have time to re-explain the entire lecture.

Did you know that the Teddy Bear was invented in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt (nicknamed“Teddy”)It all began when Theodore Roosevelt was on a bear hunting trip near Onward, Mississippi on November 14, 1902. He had been invited by Mississippi Governor Andrew H. Longino, and unlike other hunters in the group, had not located a single bear.

Roosevelts assistants, led by Holt Collier, a born slave and former Confederate cavalryman, cornered and tied a black bear to a willow tree. They suggested that Roosevelt shoot it. Viewing this as extremely unsportsmanlike, Roosevelt refused to shoot the bear. The news of this event spread quickly through newspaper articles across the country. The articles recounted the story of the president who refused to shoot a bear. However, it was not just any president; it was Theodore Roosevelt the big game hunter!endprint
