      第三部分 閱讀理解(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

If you travel around the world, you will be surprised to find just how different the foreign customs can be from your own.

A visitor in India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man clearly shaking his head at another and assume that he doesnt agree. But in many parts of India a shake of the head is a gesture that shows agreement of acceptance. Nodding your head when offered a drink in Bulgaria is likely to leave you thirsty. In that country you shake your head to indicate “yes”—a nod indicates “no”. The Arabs are known for their hospitality (好客). At a meal in countries on the Arabic Peninsula, you will find that any drinking cup is repeatedly refilled as soon as you drink it up.

In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs when sitting talking to someone, even at an important meeting. Doing this when meeting an important person in Thailand, however, could cause trouble. It is too informal an attitude for such an occasion. Also when in Thailand you are not supposed to touch the head of an adult. In Japan, it is quite usual for men to plan evening entertainments for themselves and leave their wives at home. In Europe such attitude is disappearing.

Customs vary from country to country. Visitors may be at a loss as to what to do in a foreign environment. In such circumstances, the golden rule to follow is: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

      51. In which country shouldnt you pass food with your left hand?

      A. Thailand. B. India. C. Arabic peninsula. D. Bulgaria.

      52. In which country does a person shake his head to say yes?

      A. Bulgaria. B. Thailand. C. Japan. D. Arabic Peninsula.

      53. Which of the following is impolite in Europe according to the passage?

      A. To cross legs.

      B. To touch the head of an adult.

      C. To drink up the glass in your hand.

      D. To plan evening entertainment with the wife at home.

      54. If you dont know the customs in the country where you visit, the rule to follow is ____ .

      A. to do as the Romans do B. to do nothing C. to visit Rome only D. to do as the natives do

      55. The underlined phrase “at a loss” means “____”.

      A. surprised B. worried C. excited D. puzzled

      第四部分 寫作(共三節(jié),滿分50分)

      第一節(jié) 閱讀表達(dá)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

      閱讀下面短文,并按照題目要求用英語回答問題。

In 1909 an English newspaper offered 1,000 to the first man to fly across the English Channel in an aeroplane. Today, modern jets cross it in minutes. But at that time it still seemed a good distance. The race to win the money soon became a race between two men. Both were very colourful.

One was Louis Bleriot. He owned a factory in France that made motor car lamps. He was already well known as a pilot because he had had accidents several times. Some people laughed at him. One man said, “He may not be the first to fly across the Channel but he will certainly be the first to die in an accident!” But Bleriot was really a good and brave pilot. He also had many good ideas about aeroplane design.

The other man was Hubert Latham. He was half French and half English. He took up flying when his doctors told him he had only a year to live. “Oh, well,” he said, “if I m going to die soon, I think I shall have a dangerous and interesting life now.” Latham was the first to try the flight across the Channel. Ten kilometres from the French coast, his plane had some trouble. It fell down into the water and began to sink under the water. A boat reached Latham just in time. He was sitting calmly on the wing and was coolly lighting a cigarette.

Bleriot took off six days later. He flew into some very bad weather and very low cloud. He somehow got to the English side and landed in a farmers field. When he did so, a customs (海關(guān)) officer rushed up to his plane. Planes have changed since then, but customs officers have not. “Have you anything to declare (申報(bào))?” the officer demanded.

      56. What was the award for the first man to fly across the English Channel in an aeroplane? (no more than 2 words)

      57. Why was Bleriot well known as a pilot? (no more than 7 words)

      58. Who was the first to try the flight across the Channel? (no more than 2 words)

      59. Where did Bleriot land when he tried the flight? (no more than 5 words)

      60. Who would get the money offered by the English newspaper? (no more than 2 words)

      第二節(jié) 短文改錯(cuò)(滿分15分)

What a long winter vacation! I stay at home doing nothing except homework every day as a robot. One day, an idea occurred to me: “Why not to find a part-time job to learn something newly?” The next morning, before visiting many shops, I was lucky enough to find it in a small but pretty cake shop. When a tired-looking old man came in to buy some cake, I immediately helped him sit down in the chair and brought him the cakes. After he paid them, I said thanks to him. He looked very happy but praised me with a satisfying smile.
