Like Sunday, Like Rain
Eleanor: Isn’t that thing a little heavy?
Reggie: Yeah, but I don’t mind.
Eleanor: It was pretty amazing.
Reggie: I’m sorry?
Eleanor: Your playing, in that pieces, absolutely gorgeous.
Reggie: Thanks.
Eleanor: The way of the 1)viola and the violins interacted so sad and beautiful. Who composed that?
Reggie: Me.
Eleanor: You composed it?
Reggie: I did.
Eleanor: Oh, wow, oh, you must really love doing that. I mean I can tell you really love to play.
Reggie: Something to do.
Eleanor: Is that what you wanna do when you grow up?
Reggie: When I grow up?
Eleanor: Yeah.
Reggie: No.
Eleanor: Why not?
Reggie: Why not? Well, let’s see, first off, the prospect of ending up bitter and lonely drunk doesn’t quite appeal to me.
Eleanor: OK.
Reggie: And not to mention the fact that art, as a language, is dead. Doesn’t matter what you have to say, or how well you might be able to say it. Dead.
Eleanor: Kind of a 2)bleak view.
Reggie: Yes, it is.
Eleanor: No no no no no, don’t stop, it’s beautiful.
Reggie: No, it’s really not. Not feeling too inspired for the 3)cello these days.
Eleanor: So this is where you practice?
Reggie: It’s the best place in the house, perfect 4)acoustics.
Eleanor: This place…I mean
this house is incredible.
Reggie: It was built by Captain Francis Fowke in 1898. He also designed the Museum of Natural History. It was purely a fan of big, overbearing swimming pools.
Eleanor: Why is it empty?
Reggie: Oh, my mom was going to get the tiles handmade in my orchards, or something rather. Guess she hasn’t gotten around to it. A lot of things in this house she hasn’t gotten around to do as you can clearly see.
Eleanor: Yeah, but in the meantime you could be swimming in it.
Reggie: No, not me. Don’t know how.
Eleanor: What? Why?
Reggie: Guess nobody ever taught me.
Eleanor: Well, that won’t do. I’ll teach you.
Reggie輕輕說了一句“Well, good night”。
Reggie: When I close my eyes, it feels like I’m still on the bus. What made you leave? Your whole family is here.
Eleanor: Think you just answered your own question. I wanted to go to Julliard.
Reggie: To be an actress?
Eleanor: No, god no. For music.
Reggie: Music?
Eleanor: Yeah, I played the 5)cornet.
Reggie: What?
Eleanor: The cornet, it’s like a trumpet only smaller.
Reggie: I know what a cornet is. So you’re a musician?
Eleanor: Yep.
Reggie: Why didn’t you tell me before?
Eleanor: I didn’t know how to tell you.
Reggie: How long have you played?
Eleanor: Since the fourth grade. They did this test to check everyone’s 6)tonal ability. And I got a perfect score, so I got the free rental.
Reggie: Wait, free rental? That’s how you started playing the cornet?
Eleanor: Yeah, actually I wanted to play the trumpet, but they were out. So they handed me a cornet. Which is fine by me because it’s easier to play. The case was a lot lighter to carry around.
Reggie: That was lucky.
Eleanor: Yeah, I played in a band of our high school. I loved it. I was chosen to play in the special like all star band. They put together for the ceremony to open the new war memorial in Syracuse.
Reggie: That sounds like a big deal.
Eleanor: Hilary Clinton was there to cut the ribbon, I got to play solo.
Reggie: So what happened to Julliard?
Eleanor: They invited me to attend.
Reggie: Wow.
Eleanor: Yeah. They couldn’t afford me a full scholarship. So, I didn’t have enough money for the tuition.
Reggie: That’s awful.
Eleanor: Not really. Not sure if I really wanted to go there.
Reggie: So what did you do then?
Eleanor: Got a job waiting tables. Started to play in the subway.
Reggie: No.
Eleanor: Yeah. I played all these like Beatles songs and made good money. That’s how I met Dennis.
Reggie: In the subway?
Eleanor: Yeah, he saw me and one day he just started hanging out there. On the platform, the train would come and go. He just sat there on the bench.
Reggie: Did he give you money?
Eleanor: Oh yeah. After a while he started bringing me coffee and stuff. One time he dropped me a bag of Skittles in my case. That was cute. And then finally I asked him, you know.“Hey, you ever gonna say hello?”
Reggie: What did he say?
Eleanor: He said he didn’t wanna bother me. He just loved the sound of my trumpet.
Reggie: What did you say?
Eleanor: I said, “It’s not a trumpet, dummy. It happens to be cornet.”
Reggie: What did he say?
Eleanor: I don’t remember. And he took me to lunch, this Korean barbecue place, which I thought was really cool. And we started, you know, hanging out.
Reggie: Like boyfriend and girlfriend?
Eleanor: No, not right away. He had a band. There was another thing he asked me to join his band. He plays guitar.
Reggie: Well, not anymore since you threw it out the window.
Eleanor: Yeah, well, I don’t feel so good about doing that. I let my emotions get the better of me.
Reggie: So where is your cornet?
Eleanor: I don’t have it anymore.
Reggie: Why not?
Eleanor: Long story. Got into a little financial situation.
Reggie: You sold it?
Eleanor: Sold it, yeah. There is a nice horn too, and 7)odes. My dad bought it for my high school graduation. Total surprise. I didn’t even know he was there. I hadn’t seen him for a while. And when I was leaving the ceremony, he was waiting in the parking lot. He was holding this case of a big ribbon around it.
Reggie: Well, good night.
Eleanor: Good night. What was the name of that piece you wrote for your 8)recital?
Reggie: Like Sunday, Like Rain.
Eleanor: Uh, so beautiful.
Reggie: I’ll write a part for cornet.
Reggie: Are you really never going back there?
Eleanor: Where?
Reggie: Home. You said that you were never gonna go back there.
Eleanor: Who knows? Probably someday, to see my brother if he ever comes back. You know, I worry about my sister, though sometimes I wanna 9)strangle her.
Reggie: She could come to you in New York.
Eleanor: Sure. Think actually I might head out west.
Reggie: Out west?
Eleanor: This friend of mine lives in Idaho, works in ski resort, make pretty good money. She’s always telling me she could put me up a job there.
Reggie: Sounds cold.
Eleanor: It’s really pretty. I’ve seen pictures, it’s not cold all the time.
Reggie: So that’s what you are gonna do?
Eleanor: Yeah, I think so.
Reggie: What about the cornet?
Eleanor: What about it? Come back to it someday.
Reggie: You have to.
Eleanor: Why don’t you read your book?
Reggie: Finished it. Grapes of Wrath. There’s a happy story for ya. You have a gift. And you have obligation to take care of it.
Eleanor: What are you talking about? For all you know I can be the worst cornet player in the whole world.
Reggie: I don’t think so. I don’t think you would have been chosen for that all star band if that were the case. You certainly wouldn’t have gone into Julliard. It’s a crime to deprive the world of your art.
Eleanor: Thought you said art was dead.
Reggie: Yes, it’ll always remain that way if all the great artists abandon their cornets and move to Idaho. Just promise me you’ll come back to it. Promise me you’ll come back to your music.
Eleanor: I will if you will.
Reggie: Deal.
Eleanor: She is just getting herself unpacked.
Reggie: Do you wanna go for a walk or something?
Eleanor: I think I should probably get going.
Reggie: Right. Oh, this is for you.
Eleanor: What is it?
Reggie: I made some pane with fresh pesto, and some of that crispy you like for your trip.
Eleanor: Thanks, Reggie. Oh well.
Reggie: Yeah.
Eleanor: Corrina is very nice.
Reggie: Yeah, she seems great.
Eleanor: She also likes play chess she told me.
Reggie: Cool.
Eleanor: Um…your mom’s back on the 27th and she’s gonna call you tonight. Esa’s back tomorrow morning, so…
Reggie: I know. Don’t worry. Straight on to Idaho then?
Eleanor: I’m not too sure about that right now. I think I need to go home for a while, regroup, yeah, gather myself.
Reggie: Sometimes that’s the best thing, regroup, take stock. It’s been really nice getting to know you.
Eleanor: You too.
Reggie: It’s hard to believe it’s only been a couple of months. I feel like I’ve known you…I have all these words, these things…things I feel I need to say to you, only now. Something I don’t know the capacity to speak.
Eleanor: I couldn’t stay forever, you know. There’s only supposed to be a temporary thing. It’s okay.
電影《如晴天,似雨天》(Like Sunday, Like Rain)是由Leighton Meester (《緋聞女孩》Queen B)主演的一部文藝片。
