Taiwan is better known for its commercial pop offerings in the international Chinese music market, but in the last two decades new voices that do not conform to market trends have slowly emerged, with one of the most prominent sounds in recent years being also one of Asias loudest.
Audiences are growing for a new Taiwanese brand of music that sounds so 1)starkly different from the more familiar radio-friendly pop tunes. Here in Taiwan, independent musicians earn just as much attention and have just as much star appeal as their better-groomed commercial counterparts. Even with much less marketing effort to promote themselves, independent musicians are winning 2)legions of loyal fans, hungry for their unique brand of music, voices that seem to resonate with the peoples spirit.
在國(guó)際華語(yǔ)音樂(lè)市場(chǎng)上,雖說(shuō)臺(tái)灣樂(lè)壇以商業(yè)流行音樂(lè)更為世人所知,但在過(guò)去的二十年里,有別于市場(chǎng)主流的新音樂(lè)風(fēng)格嶄露頭角。而新音樂(lè)近年不僅在臺(tái)灣島備受矚目,同時(shí)也傲視亞洲的流行樂(lè)壇。

閃靈樂(lè)團(tuán)以“交響黑金屬”樂(lè)風(fēng)橫掃臺(tái)灣樂(lè)壇,其樂(lè)風(fēng)凄厲悲壯,不僅音樂(lè)作品力道萬(wàn)鈞,舞臺(tái)表演更是令人難忘:閃靈總是以獨(dú)特的尸妝和黑衣造型登臺(tái)演出,在震懾人心的音樂(lè)爆發(fā)的同時(shí),樂(lè)迷往往也在臺(tái)下大撒冥紙,形成極為勁爆的表演場(chǎng)面。
然而,特立獨(dú)行的外表之下,閃靈的音樂(lè)內(nèi)涵也備受肯定。他們不僅是華人世界第一個(gè)受邀參與日本富士音樂(lè)祭(Fuji Rock)的樂(lè)團(tuán),巡演的足跡更遍及香港、東南亞、美國(guó)、日本,屢次受邀參加國(guó)際巨型音樂(lè)祭的演出活動(dòng)。2003年,閃靈以《永劫輪》專(zhuān)輯奪得14屆金曲獎(jiǎng)“最佳樂(lè)團(tuán)”大獎(jiǎng)。

Chthonic is an extreme metal band and one of Taiwans biggest independent music exports, with a cult following that now spans across Asia, Europe and even the U.S. While the music and 3)antics of this group seem to belong more to a niche subculture, the band has actually gained mainstream attention, winning awards like the Golden Melodies, a prize usually reserved for Taiwans more commercial pop stars.
With the recent signing of a contract with global heavyweights Spinefarm Records under Universal Music, Chthonic looks set to make their mark on the global mainstream market. But many in the industry credit this Asian bands 4)meteoric rise to the main driving force behind their music, Freddy Lim.
Freddy started Chthonic in 1995 with the aim of introducing the concept of extreme metal to a country that was still very much dominated by Chinese pop music, singing songs of happiness and heartache. Chthonics music was to have much louder messages.

Their beginnings were humble with Freddy having to make his own deliveries of the bands self-pressed CDs. Their first album, released in 1999, sold a few thousand copies within just three months. This is a feat never before seen, especially on an island yet to be exposed to heavy metal as a form of music and art.
In springtime, the quiet tranquility of this seaside town gets interrupted, shaken by Taiwans most important independent music festival. Important not because it boasts a line-up of the biggest independent Taiwanese bands, not because it features big-name guests from overseas. Spring Scream is important because this is the mother of all independent music festivals in Taiwan. It was, in a word, a “Woodstock.”Spring Scream pushed independent music and its culture into mainstream consciousness. It inspired millions of young Taiwanese to play or record or take in an alternative art form. It introduced a broader variety of music to all Taiwanese. With Spring Scream, independent music was more than just about music. It became a lifestyle.
In other parts of Asia, playing independent music might be viewed as a youthful hobby. The Taiwanese take it much more seriously. For them its a deserving vocation.

伍德斯托克音樂(lè)節(jié)
