“把勺插到墻上”

原文：Actually he stuck his spoon in the wall five weeks ago.

原譯：事實上，他在5個星期前就把勺子插到墻上去了。

辨析：Spoon和knife，fork是西方人吃飯必不可少的餐具，“把餐具插到墻上去”一定是不吃飯了，從這一點引出“死了”的意思。這是一個婉轉(zhuǎn)語。

中文里關(guān)于“死”的各種婉轉(zhuǎn)說法很多，如卒、亡、謝世、長眠、斷氣等等，反映了死者身份的不同。英語中除了demise, expire, depart, decease等die的同義詞外還有許多婉轉(zhuǎn)說法，如pass away（相當于漢語的“逝世”，比較正式），close one's eyes（閉眼），kick the bucket（相當于漢語的“翹辮子”，據(jù)說是來自上吊自殺時把腳下的桶踢開），breathe one's last （類似于漢語的“咽氣”），say the last good-bye（永別）等。

還有與宗教有關(guān)的go to heaven（上天堂），go to one's maker（回到上帝那里）。

此外，還有許多從字面意義很難聯(lián)想到“死”的說法，如play one's harp（演奏豎琴），buy a one-way ticket（買有去無回的單程票）, jump the last hurdle（跨過最后一個欄），fire one's last shot（開最后一槍），step off the plank（從跳板上跨出去），shut one's light off （熄燈），switch out the light（關(guān)燈，漢語也說“吹燈拔蠟”），pull the plug（拔掉電源插銷），shut up the shop（關(guān)店打烊），leave no trace（不留下任何痕跡），go phut（俚語，原意為“爆胎”），make one's exit（退場），check out（結(jié)賬離店），pass out of the picture（退出畫面或鏡頭），be present at the last roll call（最后一次去點名），cancel one's account（注銷賬號或戶頭），pay Saint Peter a visit（拜訪天堂守門人圣彼得），sup with Pluto（和冥王一起用餐）。

從這些婉轉(zhuǎn)說法中，我們也可以領(lǐng)略到西方文化里的另類幽默?！?/p>
