Different Ways of Eating

中美飲食習慣的差異

中國人常說：早飯吃好，午飯吃飽，晚飯吃少。對于“早飯吃好”這個說法，美國人表示贊同，但對另外兩點，他們卻不以為然；另外，中國人吃飯愛熱鬧，講究氣氛熱烈，而美國人就餐卻不愿說話，席間總是靜悄悄的。請你猜猜看，造成這些差異的原因是什么呢?

Eating habits1 change from one country to another. Not only can the food people eat change, but the way they eat can also change.

The Chinese have a saying: Eat good things for breakfast; eat a big meal for lunch until you are full; but eat less at dinner. Many Americans agree that one should start the day with a good breakfast, but their ideas about lunch and dinner are different.

Lunchtime is over quick in the United States. Most Americans only give themselves time for a quick lunch before they go back to work or school. So they eat a small lunch. After work they think they will have more time to eat a big dinner. Also a quiet dinner at home with all the family talking about their day is a way to take a good rest after a long, hard day of work.

Eating at a restaurant2 is also different. In China, people like to talk and laugh while they are eating. Very often you can hear people talking or singing loudly, and they are just having a good time. In America it is not like this. They want a quiet place where they can eat a good meal far away from the noises of the outside world. If someone is talking too loudly, other people in the restaurant will look at him or her angrily. If some people are talking too loudly, the manager3 of the restaurant might come out and ask them to be quiet. The manager may even ask them to leave the restaurant.

When Italians1 talk about their cooking to most foreigners, they always think of pizza first. But todays pizza is different from the old ones. In the past, it was hard to make pizza. As years went by, the cooks used a way to make pizza. Then it was easier to make pizza.

A long time ago, there were several kingdoms2 in Italy. Later, they became one country. During this time, Italians got some new ideas on cooking. The most interesting idea was to make pizza. The first pizza was not so delicious and did not look nice. So the cooks in Italy tried to make it better. Then this kind of food began to look nice and taste delicious. Soon it became popular around the country. Most people liked it because it was cheap, nourishing3, simple to make and nice to eat.

Now Americans eat more pizza than Italians do every day. Maybe many people in China are enjoying pizza as a meal. Do you like it?
