Volunteers tackle plastic waste
One of the biggest projects to deal with plastic pollution in the UK began on 15 May. In the first Million Mile Beach Clean, around 50,000 volunteers cleaned up beaches across the UK. The volunteers hoped to remove rubbish from thousands of miles of coastline and areas of countryside in seven days.
Million Mile Beach Clean will continue throughout the year. The aim is for 100,000 volunteers each to walk 10 miles, cleaning places along the beach. The campaign wants to address the “crisis” of plastic waste in the ocean that affects sea creatures and harms the environment. It is thought that at least eight million pieces of plastic are washed into the worlds oceans each day. These items can take hundreds of years to break down.
Surfers Against Sewage, an environmental charity in England, organized the project. Hugo Tagholm, the head of the charity, said, “We are hoping the campaign will give people the opportunity to reconnect with nature and promote health, as well as having a positive impact on our oceans and wildlife.” The clean?up is not only focused on beaches, as Tagholm explained, “We also encourage people to tackle plastic on streets, on country lanes, in parks and along local waterways.”
There are nearly 600 registered clean?ups taking place and anyone can join in with them, or even start their own “mini clean” with fewer than 10 people. The campaigns website has a list of all the cleans that are taking place around the country, including in parks, along rivers and on streets. It also explains how you can start one in your own community.
