Sophia Joffe is a Toronto-area high school student at Country Day School, who created eLearn.fyi—an online database having more than 300 online learning tools. Students are able to access her website to create an online learning profile where they can manage their studies in an approach.

The Grade 12 student used her own experience shifting from a classroom setting to an online platform as inspiration for her program.

“It was really difficult and it was really stressful knowing that right after the outbreak of COVID-19 we jumped into a totally new online learning system—it was quite different from in-class instruction,” said Joffe in an interview with CTV's Your Morning on Friday.

She expected that there would be added resources to help students cope with it as they shifted to an online learning environment, but her expectations fell short. Not only were there few available resources, but the resources lacked quality, she said.

Like many students, Joffe is concerned the COVID-19 pandemic has caused learning loss for many students. Her goal isn't only to reduce the stress the pandemic has put on students, but remove learning loss altogether.

As was first reported in The New York Times, Joffe invested $19—the cost of hosting a website—and created eLearn.fyi. By October, Joffe's online traffic had 500 unique visitors from more than 40 countries. The program categorizes grades from kindergarten to Grade 12, and then breaks subjects down, making it easier for students to digest classroom materials in a simple way. Joffe's website clearly organizes students' classes and takes them to simple apps and websites that help guide them through any given subject.

Joffe hopes the Canadian government will one day work in partnership with tech companies to modernize the learning experience and the platforms like Netflix could pose an opportunity where students can stream classes at their own pace while having their entire education at their fingertips.

      1. What did Sophia Joffe initially think of online learning?

      A. It was no different from classroom learning.

      B. It really made her feel stressed.

      C. It was an effective way to fight COVID-19.

      D. It provided a good opportunity to create eLearn.fyi.

      2. What made Joffe upset at the beginning of online learning?

      A. Not getting adequate and qualified resources.

      B. Not knowing how to obtain study materials.

      C. Having no experience in running a website.

      D. Finding it a tough job to host a website.

      3. Why did Joffe create eLearn.fyi?

      A. To gain some incomes by investing a small sum.

      B. To get her online database far more perfect.

      C. To collect some useful learning resources.

      D. To give a hand to those who are learning online.

      4. What can be inferred according to paragraph 6?

      A. eLearn.fyi has brought Joffe a big income.

      B. Joffe has benefited students at home and abroad.

      C. Joffe also sells some learning apps to students.

      D. eLearn.fyi creates a similar classroom environment.

      素養(yǎng)視角:培養(yǎng)孩子們之間的良性競爭意識

Competition is all around us and it makes the strong stronger and the weak weaker. It can also teach us how to survive in a fast-paced and stressful world. 1 . How many of us have seen young boys weeping because their teams didn't win inter-school tournaments? How many of us have seen young teenagers cheat just to win? 2 . So it's important to develop healthy competition among children.

When it comes to encouraging healthy competition among children, the first thing to do is set goals for them to stick to. 3 .

Since children may be easily affected by wrong ideas from popular media and the Internet, it's up to you to develop the right kind of spirit in them. Team spirit will help them grow into human beings who aren't easily annoyed by small losses or too excited by victories. 4 . So give them examples where family members refused to cheat to win.

5 . When they take an exam, don't ask about how much they expect to score;instead, ask what they wrote about. If your son played a cricket match at school, don't ask him whether his team won or lost; ask him how many runs he scored and encourage him to score higher next time instead. When you let your children know that you're more interested in how they perform rather than whether they lose or win, they will surely try to better themselves.

      A. However, you mustn't push them too hard or burden them with too high a goal

      B. We should also encourage healthy competition among children

      C. These are the effects of unhealthy competition

      D. In addition, they may also not want to adopt just any method to win, like cheating or lying

      E. Care more about children's performance rather than the results in a sports match

      F. However, children can be hit by competition

      G. Sending your children the right signals is also important

I had moved to Arizona about two weeks before the start of my junior year of high school, so not only was this a new school for me, but also a new state and I did not know anyone.

On the first day of school at lunch after getting my meal, I sat down at a table in the courtyard. As I began to eat, I looked around at the other tables and saw another girl sitting alone, so I decided to go and sit with her. Anyway, there was no reason for me to have a whole table for myself, and maybe I could make a friend. I walked to the table and said, “Excuse me, do you mind if I sit with you?” She was surprised at first, but then smiled and said, “No, I don't! ”

We hit it off immediately and became close friends throughout the next two years.Towards the end of our senior year, she told me that she had been accepted into an outof-state college and would be moving away after graduation. I was sad that I would miss her but at the same time was really happy for her.

She then shared with me something very moving. “Do you remember the first day of school when you came over and sat down with me during lunch?” she asked. “Of course! Why do you ask?” I replied.

She continued, “I want to let you know how special you are and that you make a difference. I was severely depressed that day, because something unhappy had happened to me that morning. I had been being sad since the morning and nobody realized my sadness. It had just cut me up. If you hadn't appeared, I would be probably in deep sadness for a long time after I got home from school.”

      Paragraph 1:

Then, she told me something more I hadn't known before.
