保持和增強(qiáng)場地公園般的感覺是更換卡爾·桑德堡小學(xué)的核心。一棵七十歲的大葉楓樹林是校園的特色，而與自然界建立了一個(gè)物理和視覺的連接是這所學(xué)校設(shè)計(jì)的關(guān)鍵。

學(xué)校設(shè)有一系列的學(xué)習(xí)“社區(qū)”與寬敞的公共空間整合是可以適應(yīng)現(xiàn)在和未來的課程需求。每三至四個(gè)教室的社區(qū)圍繞著一個(gè)合作的，專題式學(xué)習(xí)的空間，小組學(xué)習(xí)的空間和教師規(guī)劃區(qū)。這些空間之間的透明度擴(kuò)展教室，允許大大小小的團(tuán)體活動(dòng)在相鄰的共享區(qū)域內(nèi)發(fā)生。這種教室和共享區(qū)域混合的配置不但允許學(xué)生今日的靈活性，也能夠適應(yīng)未來的任何程序或功能要求。

太陽能電池板作為圖書館的遮陽罩，結(jié)合建筑的環(huán)境審美，突顯了學(xué)校對可持續(xù)發(fā)展的承諾。校園內(nèi)的多個(gè)戶外學(xué)習(xí)空間強(qiáng)化了學(xué)校與自然環(huán)境的聯(lián)系。

從桑德堡的詩經(jīng)蝕刻的前門廣場的墻壁上刻著一首彩色玻璃“泡沫”的詩，到室外露天劇場的臺(tái)階，卡爾·桑德堡詩歌的遺產(chǎn)巧妙融入了環(huán)境中。

Preserving and enhancing the park-like feel of the site was central to the replacement of Carl Sandburg Elementary.A 70-year-old grove of Big-leaf Maple Trees is a defining characteristic of the campus,and creating a physical and visual connection to nature was a key driver in the school’s design.

The school features a series of learning “neighborhoods” integrated with generously sized shared spaces that can be adapted to meet both current and future curriculum needs.Each three-to four-classroom neighborhood is organized around a collaborative,project-based learning space,small group rooms,and a teacher planning area.Transparency between these spaces expands the classroom,allowing small and large group activities to occur in the adjacent shared areas.This mix of classroom and shared area configurations allows for flexibility in student configuration today,and accommodates any future programmatic or functional requirements.

Solar panels serving as sunshades for the library,combined with the building’s environmental aesthetic,prominently display the school’s commitment to sustainability.Multiple outdoor learning spaces throughout the campus reinforce the school’s connection to its natural surroundings.

From the front entry plaza etched with a Sandburg verse,to the colorful glass “bubble” wall inscribed with a poem,to the steps of the outdoor amphitheater,the legacy of Carl Sandburg’s poetry is artfully integrated into the environment.
