When I left a company and started my own business, I thought I had it all figured out. When I made the decision to change my 1 and get fit, I thought I was on the right track. And when I purchased a second business, I assumed I was doing the right thing. 2 never occurred to me. I was all about making things happen.

During the next three years, I was 3 with work. But the busier I got, the less I 4 to achieve. I even felt emotionally and physically 5 . When I visited the doctor, I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease, a disorder with 6 like physical anxiety, tiredness, etc. Dr Joy advised me to do some 7 on Graves’ disease and slow down a little.

Following the doctor’s advice, I surfed the Internet and learned Graves’ disease is often caused and 8 by stress. “How is your stress level?” I asked myself. The following day, the 9 appeared again when I came across an old friend. After exchanging 10 , Cindy said, “You’ve taken on a lot. You’d better slow down and relax yourself.”

I smiled, “I have to 11 some of those projects I’m juggling (兼顧) are starting to get heavy.”

“So, 12 juggling and put something 13 . It’s OK to tell people ‘no’.” With these words, she went away.

I wrote down everything I was juggling. My calendar was so filled with duties that I 14 had time to relax. I examined the 15 . It was clear that I didn’t want to do it all. So I 16 to have white space on my schedule. I 17 using an orange highlighter (熒光筆) to block out time for myself to 18 and focus on what’s important.

I’ve learned to be 19 to myself. Every day I spend some alone time doing something interesting to 20 myself, which plays a big part in my well-being.

I was watching a TV series one night when I took in one scene. A man was seeking his community votes (選票), and people 1 wanted to know why they should give him their 2 . He took them to his house and on every 3 in his house was the word “Faith” pasted (張貼). People raised lots of 4 to find out why the word was pasted on his mirrors. He said, “My dad often 5 me to believe that as long as you have 6 , you should have faith. Every time you look into the mirror, you’re looking at yourself and see ‘Faith’.”

The 7 I learned from this is simple—faith is a living thing and in the same way we’re all 8 given 24 hours a day and we’re all given the same measure of faith. Faith keeps us going when things get 9 ! Why is some people’s faith stronger than that of others? Exercise! If we choose to exercise our faith, it will 10 ; but if we choose not to, it remains weak. Some people might 11 that they don’t have faith, but we all practice faith every day even if we don’t 12 the truth that it was faith. Daily 13 , such as studying, investing or reaching for a dream, take faith.

Faith 14 hearing and doing. I made a decision yesterday—to 15 reading the newspaper full of too much sad and 16 news. Why? Because I 17 there was a drop of my mental state (心境) after reading the newspapers.

Faith, when it’s put to 18 , becomes a beautiful thing. It lifts your mental state to a higher place that 19 you to raise yourself up and declare, “Yes, we can.” So make the decision today to strengthen your faith by 20 it.

When I think back to my childhood, I like to recall the superheroes that filled my Saturday morning cartoon marathons. Wearing my warm pajamas, eyes fixed on the 1 , I remember how I 2 those larger-than-life superheroes fighting against enemies and challenging the 3 . They opened up a world of 4 .

As a child, I think we all admire the idea that there are people in this world who can 5 the impossible things—do things that 6 people cannot. Fictional superheroes are usually 7 as the people having extraordinary or superhuman power and are devoted to 8 the public. But there are real-life heroes 9 there. They don’t have fascinating power that we can only 10 of. I am talking about unsung heroes in our 11 —the people we often forget—the cashiers at our 12 grocery stores, mechanics who fix our cars, people who cook the food in our local restaurants, daycare workers, those working on the frontline of non-profit organizations, secretaries, and the 13 goes on.

I try to express my 14 every day to the people who make our lives 15 , even when we don’t realize it. Just everyone in your community is 16 an unsung hero to someone in their lives.

Life is a 17 at times and each of us has a story to tell. Someone else is thankful for less than what you have. An unsung hero of mine who 18 my day was a lady in the line behind me at the grocery store who said, “It doesn’t 19 whether the glass is full or empty. Jose Adolfo Quisocala Condori, a Peruvian (秘魯?shù)模?boy, started a children’s savings bank when he was only 7 years old. Today, his bank has been 1 to serve over 2,000 clients (客戶).

They would then set a savings 14 , and could only get 15 from their accounts when they reached it.”

Skydiving isn’t an activity for the faint of heart, but when you do it at 101 years old, you’re pretty much superhuman. Verdun Hayes became the 1 person in the world to complete a 15,000-foot tandem jump (雙人跳傘), 2 the Guinness World Records he once set up.

Verdun Hayes wasn’t 3 . He finished the jump with eight family members and two close 4 at Dunkeswell Airport in England. As they 5 to make the jump, the entire family looked nervous, but 6 as well. Hayes’ grandson-in-law Ian Honnor, the organizer of the family’s jump, said, “He was probably the calmest one on the 7 . He had no fear and just loved it. He just wanted everyone to 8 it and be healthy.” Honnor, who helped 9 the outing, said this wasn’t Hayes’ first jump! When he was more than ninety years old, his family kept telling him he wasn’t 10 to do the jump. However, he didn’t give up his 11 . At the age of 100, he 12 realized his ambition and became the first man of such an advanced age to 13 a tandem skydive.

This time he decided to shoot for the world record. “Because it’s such a big 14 , it was decided that as many people in the family as we could possibly get were going to go in 15 of him,” Honnor said. “He had four generations of his family in the 16 at the same time—they ranged from age 16 to 101.” The family held a big party to 17 his achievement.

Hayes even had some 18 for those people hoping to 19 the same thing at his age. “Just keep your mind 20 occupied (忙于) by positive thought and keep your body as fit as you possibly can,” said Hayes. “Those are the two great things.”

I loved my first-grade teacher, Mrs Gross. She had such a 1 smile and kind heart. I wasn’t sure what her 2 was at that time but she already looked very grandmotherly.

Unlike some other teachers, she never 3 her students. To me, it felt like having a second grandmother as my 4 . Every day I arrived at her classroom and sat 5 at my desk with a big smile on my face. Throughout all my years of school I always remembered the happiest times I had spent in her classroom.

One such 6 is still with me to this day. We were doing math problems when Mrs Gross walked through the classroom 7 our work. I finished it first and lifted my 8 up just as Mrs Gross walked up behind me. She looked at my work and 9 . Then she said, “Well done, Joe. You’re a very 10 boy.” As she walked on, she gently touched my shoulder and I felt 11 in my heart. It felt so good to be 12 . From that moment on, I always tried my best. I always wanted to be what she 13 me to be. With her good words full of love and 14 , I started down a wonderful path that I am 15 on today.

David Whyte wrote, “People are 16 and one good word is bread for a thousand.” I think the good words Mrs Gross gave me helped me 17 my own good words with others. I think the 18 she showed me helped me to give love to others.

In this life we can 19 much more than we realize. Every kind word, every loving act, every helping hand is a 20 in the eyes of someone in need. So, fill your days with good words and make your life a gift of love.
