Timeless Masterpiece of Calligraphy
Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection was composed and handwritten by Wang Xizhi on April 22, 353AD. It was the third day of the third month on the lunar calendar. A group of celebrated artists, poets, writers, politicians and monks met at the Orchid Pavilion on the spring day. They drank wine and wrote poems. Intoxicated, Wang Xizhi wrote a preface to the collection of the poems created on the occasion, thus giving birth to the timeless masterpiece of calligraphy and prose. To mark this great cultural event of more than 1,600 years ago in Chinese history, this April issue of Cultural Dialogue explores Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection from various perspectives.
