The commission for the Info-Box was the result of an invited competition in 1994. The aim was to design a building which would reflect the worldwide interest in the building activities on PotsdamerPlatz of recently re-united Berlin. In this information pavilion, the planned construction projects were to be presented through models, computer animations and plans.
schneider+schumacher proposed a temporary building whose peculiarity and originality stood out clearly from the surrounding buildings. The bright red box was concise and easily identifiable, hovering on stilts above the surrounding chaos. This was at the time the largest construction site in Europe with countless cranes, scaffolding, building materials and roadblocks. It was a simple yet powerful gesture.
The self-confident box, hovering seven meters above the ground, was accessed by an elevator and a filigree steel staircase, which once again emphasized the temporary nature of the building. From this staircase, the visitor had an attractive view of the Reichstag, the former Wall site and the construction site.
In October 1995 the Info-Box opened and in a very short time attracted a large audience, welcoming its fourth millionth visitor in February 1998. In January 2001 it had to give way to make room for the new Berlin.
