Have you ever dreamed of traveling in space? Like most kids, when you look at the stars, youll imagine that you will be an astronaut1. It would be lots of fun to travel on a spaceship, just think about how wonderful it would be to stand on the moon or another planet!
Of course, its not easy to become an astronaut. There arent many astronauts in the world, so you have to learn many skills in different areas. Astronauts have many skills so that they can be suitable2 to be traveling scientists beyond Earth.
Although it sounds like it would be great fun to travel to outer space, there would be a lot of work to do. You should take lots of preparation if you want to travel to outer space. Everything has to be planned carefully in advance. Why? Because once you leave Earths surface, youll be all alone with the things you have in your spaceship. Theres no store to go to in space!
Once you are in space, nothing can enter the ship and nothing can go out. You must take everything you need to survive3 into outer space with you. Lets call these items “inputs4”. Inputs might include necessities such as food, water and oxygen.
Now lets talk about “outputs5”. Every input creates an output. Lets say you open a box of Coco Comets cereal6 for breakfast. What will you do with the box when it is empty? You only have so much room to store outputs on your spaceship. The garbage7 you create will be on the ship with you. Where will you store the garbage?
In order to survive, you must eat and drink, but this means your body will also turn these food and water into other forms8 of waste. Because nothing can leave the spaceship, you will need to think of a way to handle these bodily wastes. It might seem disgusting9, but this is an important question.
Even breathing creates an output—carbon dioxide!Do you know how to deal with the carbon dioxide? Hint: Plants love carbon dioxide and depend on it. Also, plants output oxygen! However, plants also have other input needs like water.
So, you have to plan for the trip to outer space very carefully. You have to think about all the things youll need, and you also have to consider what wastes these things will create.
Packing for a trip to outer space isnt a simple thing. It will take you time and energy. And you can start right now!Perhaps, you should make a plan that will have the least influence10 on the environment and your future.
