    三、閱讀理解 (共20小題,每小題2分,滿分40分)

    請認真閱讀下列短文,從短文后各題所給的A、B、C、D四個選項中,選出最佳選項。

    A

Never before in Chinese history has a documentary film aroused so much public enthusiasm. Everybody is talking about a new 7part documentary called A Bite of China which was recently broadcast late at night on CCTV 1. The documentary describes variousgourmet itemsacross the vast Chinese culinary (烹飪的) landscape.

According to Taobao, Chinas biggest online retail website, just five days after the series began to air, nearly 6 million people went to the site in search of various local specialities, particularly those mentioned in the documentary. More than 72 million deals were concluded. A ham producer from Yunnan Province saw his sales grow 17fold in five days.

However, one cant help but believe that the documentarys popularity is probably linked to the endless stream of terrible food security issues that have emerged in recent years. In one wellreceived article, a netizen wrote, “I wonder how many felt so emptyhearted and sighed after watching the film. Bluevitriol watered chive, formaldehyde (甲醛) sprayed cabbage, Sudan Red colored salty eggs, restaurants using gutter oil. The list is long...”

A varied and ancient food culture that is famous worldwide and which should have made the Chinese proud ends like this:One can only sigh. Food is the most vital thing in peoples lives. Yet Chinas food industry is a typical description of “bad money driving out the good”. The market is huge while the cost of faking and cheating is so low for unscrupulous (不道德的) businessmen; and the punishment is too light. Take the milk industry as an example. Although Sanlu, the company that sold the melamineadulterated milk powder, was punished, thousands of other dairies didnt work hard to improve the quality. In order to allow national brands to survive, Chinese authorities are happy to loosen their regulations.

As the documentary shows, people are attracted not to gourmet items like matsutake, a species of rare mushroom grown naturally in remote forests, but to common Chinese dishes like barley, lotus root or tofu. They are what meet our basic needs. This explains why people are so excited about A Bite of China—it is a reminder that there is still a world out there where food is excellent and people have dignity.

36.The underlined part “gourmet items” probably means_____________.

    A. beautiful clothesB. latest technology

    C. delicious food D. great inventions

37.The second paragraph mainly talks about_____________.

    A. the producer of the document

    B. the content of the document

    C. the history of Chinese gourmet

    D. the popularity of the document

    38. We can infer from what a netizen wrote in one well received article that_____________.

A.none of the television viewers have a knowledge of the Chinese food culture

    B. there is a huge contrast between the ancient food culture and the reality

    C. the price of food is too high for many common people

    D. the documentary was made by a world famous Chinese director

    B

With hospitals and nursing homes tending to thousands of patients every year, accidents can—and do—happen. These incidents, whether they are through carelessness or otherwise, can leave patients feeling powerless. Thats not the case.

“There is growing public awareness. People are feeling they have more rights and they have tools in hand to make a complaint,” said Ralph Montano, spokesman for the California Department of Public Health, which regulates hospitals and longterm care facilities in the state.

That department received more than 6,000 complaints about hospitals in 2007; in the most recent year statistics are available. The complaints can be about mixedup lab results, medicine errors, foreign objects left in a patient during surgery or a host of other topic.

Similarly, the California Department of Aging received 43,000 nursing home complaints in 2009. Some said patient abuse or neglect of patients; others reported missing items. And some commented on the quality of the food.

But finding the channels through them to put forward a complaint can be tiring and time consumption. Many consumers simply dont bother, and some become lost in the system. Whether the complaint is against a hospital or a longterm care facility, the process is similar—and many people can help, including the facilitys staff, insurance company representatives and state regulators.

If you want to make a complaint while in the hospital, Patti Harvey, vice president of quality and patient care services for Kaiser Permanente in Southern California, recommends talking with the bedside nurse. If that doesnt work, you can talk with other people higher in the chain of command, up to the hospital administrator. If the problem isnt still taken care of—say you disagree with your treatment plan or have a problem with your doctor—member service offices at each hospital can help address your concerns.

39.Why are there more complaints from patients?

A.Because hospitals have more and more rights.

    B. Because its convenient for people to put forward complaints.

    C. Because in the hospital there are more accidents than before.

    D. Because there are more departments to deal with complaints.

40.Many consumers dont make a complaint because_____________.

    A. few accidents happen

    B. it takes time to make a complaint

    C. many complaints are lost

    D. complaints are bad for a longterm care facility

    41. The last paragraph mainly tells us_____________.

    A. how to make complaints in the hospital

    B. something about Patti Harvey

    C. to solve problems with the hospital quickly

D.we should say we disagree with the treatment plan

    C

The advent of warm weather here in Maine calls for a seasonal ritual that, for me, puts an end to winter—fetching the wooden screen door.

Note that I wrote “wooden”. The aluminum models just wont do it—they close too neatly and keep their perfect form for decades. In the 1960s, a time of imperfection, there was no perfect house, no perfect car, no perfect kids or parents. Why should a screen door be an exception?

I grew up with my siblings in a workingclass neighborhood in New Jersey. When the warm weather arrived, my dad would pull out the wooden screen door and install it over the back door, which could then be left wide open, admitting a refreshing breeze (we had no air conditioning).

My father was a Mr. Fixit, so keeping the screen door serviceable was one of his hobbies. Every few years he gave it a fresh coat of paint and fixed it a bit. I distinctly remember him putting the last screw in the last hinge (鉸鏈), and swinging the door shut with a “crack!”

A good, wooden screen door, unsightly as it was, had an invaluable function in the age of the stayathome mom: It alerted her to the coming and going of the kids. My siblings, and my friends ran in and out of the house, tearing the screen door open and letting it slap shut behind us. A hundred times a day. It was all good, and my mom never complained about the noise, because that was the purpose of a wooden screen door—to slam shut and thereby announce that her children were within earshot.

Several years ago, in a fit of nostalgia (懷舊), I went shopping for a wooden screen door. I was disappointed in the choices available. They looked a bit too solid, too well made. But I found one online, and within a week it was delivered to my doorstep.

The firm had sent me one with the wrong dimensions, so I asked my carpenter to make the necessary adjustments. Ozzie worked away at it for a couple of hours until he got it to sit neatly in its frame. I gave it a test: I pulled it open and let go. It closed in a lazy fashion. “Not good,” I pronounced. “Please remove the automatic door closer and adjust the door so it swings shut with a good crack.”

Ozzie went about his work and a short while later the task was done. The door was uneven in its frame, and the screen no longer lay flat. But when I pulled open the door and released it, the thing clapped shut like a rifle shot. “What do you think?” I asked. “It looks like hell,” said Ozzie. “But it sounds like heaven,” I said. And I, being the owner of the door—and the memory—had the final word.

42.What particular function did the wooden screen door perform in the writers childhood?

A.It functioned as an air conditioner in summer.

    B. It helped sharpen his fathers repairing skills.

    C. It was more like a toy that kids often played with.

    D. It made Mom aware that the kids were close by.

43.The reason why the writer asked the carpenter to continue to adjust the door is that_____________.

A.the door was not the right size for the frame

    B. the door was poorly made that it didnt suit him

    C. he wanted to see how the door was supposed to shut

    D. he was determined to seize the ownership of the door

    44. What is the best title for the passage?

    A. The good old days are gone

    B. Never judge a door by its appearance

    C. Summer announces itself with a crack

    D. Every single imperfection adds to beauty

    D

British children used to play conkers (板栗游戲) in the autumn when the horsechestnut trees started to drop their shiny brown nuts. They would select a suitable chestnut, drill a hole in it and thread it onto a string, then swing their conker at that of an opponent until one of them broke. But the game has fallen out of favour. Children spend less time outdoors and rarely have access to chestnut trees. Besides, many schools have banned conkers games, worried that they might cause injuries or nut allergies.

That sort of riskaverseness (規(guī)避風險) now spreads through every aspect of childhood. Playgrounds have all the excitement designed out of them to make them safe. Many governments, particularly in societies such as America, have tightened up their rules, requiring parents to supervise (監(jiān)管) young children far more closely than in the past. Frank Furedi of the University of Kent, a critic on modern parenting, argues that allowing children to play unsupervised or leaving them at home alone is increasingly described as a symptom of irresponsible parenting.

In part, such increased caution is a response to the huge wave of changes. Largescale urbanization, smaller and more mobile families, the move of women into the labor market and the digitization of many aspects of life have unavoidably changed the way that people bring up their children. There is little chance that any of these trends will be changed, so todays more intensive (精細化的) parenting style is likely to go on.

Such parenting practices now embraced by wealthy parents in many parts of the rich world, particularly in America, go far beyond an adjustment to changes in external conditions. They mean a strong bid to ensure that the advantages enjoyed by the parents generation are passed on to their children. Since success in life now turns mainly on education, such parents will do their best to provide their children with the schooling, the character training and the social skills that will secure access to the best universities and later the most attractive jobs.

To some extent that has always been the case . But there are more such parents now, and they are competing with each other for what economists call positional goods. This competition starts even before the children are born. The wealthy classes will take their time to select a suitable spouse and get married, and will start a familyonly when they feel ready for it.

Children from less advantaged backgrounds, by contrast, often appear before their parents are ready for them. In America 60% of births to single women under 30 are unplanned, and over 40% of children are born outside marriage. The result, certainly in America, has been to widen already massive social inequalities yet further.

All the evidence suggests that children from poorer backgrounds are at a disadvantage almost as soon as they are born. By the age of five or six they are far less “schoolready” than their betteroff peers, so any attempts to help them catch up have to start long before they get to school. America has had some success with various schemes involving regular home visits by nurses or social workers to lowincome families with new babies. It also has long experience with programmes for young children from poor families that combine support for parents with goodquality child care. Such programmes do seem to make a difference. Without extra effort, children from lowincome families in most countries are much less likely than their betteroff peers to attend preschool education, even though they are more likely to benefit from it. And data from the OECDs PISA programme suggest that children need at least two years of preschool education to perform at their best when they are 15.

So the most promising way to ensure greater equality may be to make earlyyears education and care for more widely available and more affordable, as it is in the Nordics. Some governments are already rethinking their educational priorities, shifting some of their spending to the early years.

Most rich countries decided more than a century ago that free compulsory education for all children was a worthwhile investment for society. There is now an argument for starting preschool education earlier, as some countries have already done. In the face of crushing new inequalities, a modern version of that approach is worth trying.

45.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?

A.More attention is placed on childrens safety.

    B. More and more parents are becoming irresponsible.

    C. Children are no longer interested in outdoor activities.

    D. Parents are advised to spend more time with their children.

46.Which of the following about intensive parenting style is TRUE?

A.Chances are that this style could be changed.

B.Financial pressure forces parents to be stricter.

    C. Rich families adopt such style to keep their advantages.

    D. Such style is largely influenced by the size of the family.

47.What does the underlined sentence imply?

A.Economists offer practical advice to guide parenting.

    B. A happy marriage secures childrens social positions.

    C. Unfair division of social resources drives parents mad.

    D. Parents are struggling for their childrens edge over peers.

48.Which is the proper measure to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor?

A.Parents are persuaded to give birth to babies in their later years.

    B. Funds are provided for poor children after they are admitted to school.

    C. New babies in lowincome families are sent to nurses or social workers.

    D. Children from lowincome families are ensured to receive early education.

49.Whats the authors attitude towards investment in preschool education?

    A. Supportive._________B. Disapproving.

    四、任務(wù)型閱讀(共10小題,每小題1分,滿分10分)

The word science is heard so often in modern times that almost everybody has an idea of its meaning. However, its definition is difficult for many people. The meaning of the term is confusing, but everyone should understand its meaning and objectives (目標). Just to make the explanation as simple as possible, suppose science is defined as classified knowledge or facts.

Even in the true science, distinguishing fact from fiction is not always easy. For this reason great care should be taken to distinguish between beliefs and truths. There is no danger as long as a clear difference is made between temporary and proved explanations. For example, hypotheses (假設(shè)) and theories are attempts to explain natural phenomena. From these positions the scientist continues to experiment and observe until they are proved or discredited. The exact status of any explanation should be clearly labeled to avoid confusion.

The objectives of science are primarily the discovery and later the understanding of the unknown. Man cannot be satisfied with recognizing that secrets exist in nature of that questions are unanswerable; he must solve them. Toward that end, specialists in the field of biology and related fields of interest are directing much of their time and energy.

Actually, two basic approaches lead to the discovery of new information. One, aimed at satisfying curiosity, is referred to as pure science. Sometimes practicalminded people miss the point of pure science in thinking only of its immediate application for economic rewards. However, one should remember that the construction of the microscope had to come before the discovery of the cell. The host of scientists devoting their lives to pure science are not apologetic about ignoring the practical side of their discoveries; they know from experience that most knowledge is eventually applied.

The other is aimed at using knowledge for specific purposes—for instance, improving health, raising standards of living, or creating new consumer products. In this case knowledge is put to economic use. Such an approach is referred to as applied science.

Selfconfidence is crucial to our development. However, lack of selfconfidence is common among middle school students. Some dare not express themselves publicly while others think negatively or have poor capacity to handle problems.

Undoubtedly, embracing selfconfidence is of tremendous significance to us middle school students. Being confident can help us overcome difficulties when were encountered with adversity and feel discouraged. With selfconfidence, we may accomplish what seems to be impossible previously. Actually, it has been universally acknowledged that selfconfidence is half of the success that can bring us courage to stick to what we do.

Given the importance of selfconfidence to our success, we should spare no effort to cultivate and boost it. Setting specific and realistic goals can make us confident and hopeful about life. In addition, giving ourselves praise and reward for our achievements will lift our confidence level. With firm determination and courage we can become more confident.
