    Flying

Ever since I was old enough to dream, I have imagined myself soaring with the eagles. My love of flying has shaped the way I live and the person I have become. Two years ago, that passion rocketed to new heights when I had the opportunity to visit Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona. For a whole week I lived in a college dorm, roomed with a total stranger and—best of all—I flew!

My group took part in activities ranging from learning about the history of aviation to flying in state-of-the-art pilot training simulators (模擬裝置). At least once a day, I devoted myself to learning one of the worlds best training aircrafts, the Cessna 182. Not only did I receive thorough ground instruction, but I also got to fly. In total, I flew five hours to receive my private pilots license. In that one joyous and ohsoshort week, my passion for aviation grew even stronger. Now, whenever I see a plane flying overhead, I feel a sense of pride thinking Ive done that.

During my time in and above the Arizona desert, I learned not only about the mechanics and techniques of aviation, but also about myself and how I see the world. As I floated in that seemingly endless sea of air, I became aware of the variety and complexity of the humanity below. On the ribbons of roadways, each tiny car carried people with hopes and dreams. I wondered if any of those people had ever wished to fly like an eagle. Then I realized that each must have his or her own dreams and ambitions. Thats what makes us unique. We try to respond to something special inside us. I also realized that I was especially fortunate to be making my own dream come true.

Everywhere I go, I hear, “Do what makes you happy and you will be happy.” It sounds like standard advice, but Ive really thought about it and taken it to heart. I couldnt care less about how much money I make or what benefits I receive. I know that I am already in hot pursuit of my dreams. And, even if they change, even if they finally dont involve aviation, Ill always aim to fly with the eagles.

    38. Paragraph 2 is mainly about ???.

    B. which aircraft the author got to fly

    C. what the author learned about simulators

    D. why the author got a pilots license

    39. According to the author, ????makes people unique.

    A. flying like an eagle

    B. having their own dreams

    C. trying something special

    D. learning unusual techniques

    40. From the last paragraph, we can learn that the author ???.

    A. cares a lot about money and benefits

    B. brings happiness to others

    C. offers advice wherever he goes

    D. pursues his aims whatever happens

Intelligence makes for better leaders—from undergraduates to executives to presidents—according to multiple studies. It certainly makes sense that handling a market shift or legal dilemma requires cognitive competence. But a new research on leadership suggests that, at a certain point, having a higher IQ can be viewed as harmful.

Although previous research has shown that groups with smarter leaders perform better by objective measures, some studies have hinted that followers might subjectively view leaders with great intellect as less effective. Decades ago Dean Simonton, a psychologist at the University of California, Davis, proposed that brilliant leaderswords may simply go over peoples heads, their solutions could be more complicated to implement and followers might find it harder to relate to them. Now Simonton and two colleagues have finally tested that idea, publishing their results in the July 2017 issue of the Journal of Applied Psychology.

The researchers looked at 379 male and female business leaders in 30 countries, across fields that included banking, retail and technology. The managers took IQ tests (an imperfect but strong predictor of performance in many areas), and each was rated on leadership style and effectiveness by an average of eight co-workers. IQ positively correlated (關(guān)聯(lián)) with ratings of leader effectiveness, strategy formation, vision and several other characteristics—up to a point. The ratings peaked at an IQ of around 120, which is higher than roughly 80 percent of office workers. Beyond that, the ratings declined. The researchers suggest the “ideal” IQ could be higher or lower in various fields, depending on whether technical versus social skills are more valued in a given work culture.

“Its an interesting and thoughtful paper,” says Paul Sackett, a psychology professor at the University of Minnesota, who was not involved in the research. “To me, the right interpretation of the work would be that it highlights a need to understand what high-IQ leaders do leads to lower perceptions (理解) by followers. The wrong interpretation would be, ‘Dont hire high-IQ leaders.”

The studys lead author, John Antonakis, a psychologist at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, suggests leaders should use their intelligence to generate creative metaphors that will persuade and inspire others—the way former U.S. President Barack Obama did. “I think the only way a smart person can signal their intelligence appropriately and still connect with the people,” Antonakis says, “is to speak in appealing ways.”

    41. The reason that those with high IQs are viewed as worse leaders is probably that ???.

    A. followers think of their leaders to be less effective

    B. they are hard to get their schemes across to followers

    C. their IQ has a positive correlation with leader effectiveness

    D. their social skills cant be recognized in some work culture

    42. Which of the following graphs shows the correct relationship between IQ points and leadership qualities?

    43. To improve their leadership, high-IQ leaders can ???.

    A. interpret the work they are involved in

    B. take a course in leader effectiveness

    C. use inspiring and accessible language

    D. communicate more with their followers

    44. What could be the best title for the passage?

    A. A way to success of high-IQ leaders

    B. The latest research on intelligence

    C. Choose to be a leader of low intelligence

    D. Does a high IQ advance your leadership?

    D

Early in the recent BBC / PBS miniseries Little Women, the first significant adaptation of Louisa May Alcotts novel in 24 years, Laurie (played by Jonah Hauer-King) tells Jo (Maya Hawke)—the first March sister he falls in love with—how much he enjoys watching her family from his nearby window. “It always looks so idyllic (田園詩般的), when I look down and see you through the window of the living room in the evenings,” he says. “Its like the window is a frame and youre all part of a perfect picture.”

“You must cherish your illusions if they make you happy,” Jo replies.

The book, Little Women, a treasured American classic and peerless coming-of-age story for girls, is loosely inspired by Alcotts own biography. Like Jo, she was the second of four sisters who grew up in Massachusetts under the watchful eye of an intelligent and forceful mother. Unlike Jos early years—in which her father is absent because, after losing the family fortune, he is serving as a priest in the Civil War—Alcotts childhood was ruined by the failure of her father, Bronson Alcott, to provide for his family.

The four sisters, frequently cared for by friends and relatives, were mobile and often forced to live apart. Alcotts sister Lizzie was affected with scarlet fever while visiting a poor immigrant family nearby, much as Beth does in the novel. But Lizzies death at 22, unlike Beths around the same age, according to some modern biographers, resulted from anxiety or anorexia (厭食癥). And while Jo, by convention, picked marriage and children over artistic greatness, Alcott chose the opposite, enjoying her newfound wealth and her success as a “l(fā)iterary spinster (老姑娘).”

For the first 80 or so years after Little Women was published, conflict scarcely arose over how to interpret it. Readers adored the book without exploring Alcotts own feelings (curious though her fans were about her life). Then, from the 1970s onward, feminist critics began examining Little Women from a new perspective. The character who continually resists living up to traditional expectations of graceful femininity and domesticity (Jo) is the true heroine, and the character who unfailingly obeys dies shortly after reaching adulthood.

The blossoming of feminist criticism finally gave Little Women the thoughtful, rigorous (一絲不茍) analysis it deserved. Exploring the internal tug-of-war between the novels progressive instincts and the eras prevailing restrictions revealed a book that was far from nonsense. ?48?, Little Women continues to be sidelined in the American literary works. Its reputation as fictional fare for and about girls and women prevents it, even now, from achieving the status of, say, Huckleberry Finn. Many male readers feel, as G. K. Chesterton put it, like “an intruder in that club of girls.” At the same time, the books popularity shows signs of decrease among a younger audience. But the fascination with Little Women endures among writers and filmmakers. Inspired by the challenge of bridging the gap between Alcotts life and Alcotts writing, efforts to renew and expand its power help shed light on complexities in a novel whose literary fame is ripe for reevaluation.

The wealth of adaptations of Little Women over the past century is proof of its durability, and also its malleability (延展性). As Anne Boyd Rioux writes in Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy: The Story of Little Women and Why It Still Matters, stage and screen versions of the novel have reflected the eras they were made in. Early ones offered morally and socially wholesome entertainment in the detailed spirit of the original text. During the Great Depression, when audiences were consoled by the idea of simpler times, theatrical performances of Little Women were popular across America. By 1949, when Mervyn LeRoy directed the fourth film adaptation, this one with an allstar cast (Janet Leigh as Meg, June Allyson as Jo, Margaret OBrien as Beth, and Elizabeth Taylor as Amy), consumerism had become a patriotic (愛國的) duty. So the movies writers invented a new scene in which the March sisters go on a Christmas spending spree with money from Aunt March.

    45. The miniseries “Little Women” show ???.

    A. more people have fallen in love with Little women

    B. what the best love stories for girls and women are

    C. the original novel Little Women is worth studying again

    D. females in America possess a higher social status than before

    46. What do you know about Alcotts families?

    A. Alcotts father once served in the Civil War.

    B. Alcotts mother was intelligent and caring.

    C. Lizzie died for lack of food at the age of 22.

    D. Alcott was fond of literature and remained single.

    47. What is the authors attitude towards the novel “Little Women”?

    A. Supportive.??B. Negative.

    C. Objective.?D. Subjective.

    48. Which of the following can best fill in the blanks in the last paragraph but one?

    A. Therefore.??B. However.

    C. Additionally.??D. Otherwise.

    49. What does “the March sisters go on a Christmas spending spree with money from Aunt March” in the last paragraph probably imply?

    A. The March sisters dont care about spending Aunt Marchs money.

    B. The March sisters consider it a glory to consume a lot on Christmas.

    C. The March sisters involve themselves in buying a lot with wild excitement.

    D. The March sisters want to show their love to their motherland by spending a lot.

    50. What does the author mainly argue for?

    A. It makes no sense to explore the complexities of Little Women.

    B. Feminist criticism causes conflict over how to explain Little Women.

    C. Little Women is not popular with a younger audience, especially boys.

    D. Adaptations of Little Women appealed to different tastes of different times.

Were often reminded “choose your words carefully”. Theres mounting evidence that our personality is written, quite literally, in the language that we use.

Not all findings are particularly surprising. Those who score highly on extroversion are louder and chattier than their more introverted peers. Female extroverts are more likely to have group chats, while introvert men spend more time talking to themselves.

But introverts and extroverts also use language very differently. A group of researchers at VU University, Amsterdam, asked a group of 40 volunteers to look at and describe photos of different social situations. They found that different from extroverts, introverts spoke in more specific terms.

In line with this, other research has found that introverts tend to use more articles (the / a). They also tend to be more cautious in their language: that is, they use more hedging (perhaps, maybe), and more quantifiable terms, such as referring to specific numbers.

All of this makes psychological sense. Most extroverts enjoy the fast life; every time they open their mouths, too, extroverts are prepared to take greater risks with the accuracy, spontaneity and reach of what they say.

The links between personality and language also extend to the written word. When researchers from the University of Toronto asked students to write about past experiences and future goals, they found that those who scored higher in extroversion tended to make more mention of words pertaining to relationships, which makes sense, the researchers said, as extroverts are “active social explorers”.

Most of these studies have looked at the language we use in isolation. But what happens when we chat together? One study found that if you put a bunch of introverts in a room together, theyll probably end up talking about problem solving (“Ive got to look for an apartment because my roommates are driving me nuts”).

In contrast, when extroverts talk to each other they cover a wider range of topics and display more “pleasure talk”, such as “I like jogging”.

These days we also spend our days sending emails, blogging and posting updates to Twitter. And it seems we betray our personalities in these digital forums too.

By analyzing the content of nearly 700 blogs, researchers at the University of Texas found that the words people used matched up with the way they reported their own personality: for instance, those who viewed themselves as more agreeable used fewer swear words.

The idea that we reveal something fundamental about ourselves every time we speak, write or tweet, is a little disconcerting—especially if you generally prefer to keep your character profile to yourself. But it also offers an opportunity to change the way youre seen by others in situations like a job interview or the early stages of dating.

    五、書面表達(滿分25分)

    請閱讀下面圖表和相關(guān)文字,并按照要求用英語寫一篇150 詞左右的文章。

For many, going to college is the first step toward freedom. But freedom also means independence, which means youll have to learn how to handle everything by yourself.

One of the biggest problems with being an independent student is money, since many young people havent had the chance to earn any of their own, let alone manage any. Yet, college students are expected to plan their monthly living expenses all on their own, which nearly half of US high school students dont think theyre ready for yet, according to the graphic on the right.

    【寫作內(nèi)容】

    1. 用約30個詞概括上述圖表和文字內(nèi)容;

    2. 用約120個單詞闡述你對大學(xué)生消費的看法,并就如何管理好開銷提出2~3個建議。

    58. separately?59. discuss / share?60. consistent

    五、One possible version:

As is presented in the selection and the graph, though for students going to college means independence, 47% of the students dont feel ready to manage their finances.

From where I stand, whether they have the chance to earn money or not, they should learn how to manage their money. In particular, they should try to be themselves and live within their means, not keeping up with the Joneses. To manage their money, they should create a budget of how much they are planning to spend on items and try to keep track of everything they spend. Another tip is to learn to separate “wants” from “needs”. The best way to do this is to ask themselves, “Do I really need this?” if they see something they really want to buy. Indeed, if they only bought what they needed instead of what they wanted, money wouldnt be such a worry at all.
