A faculty club is a meeting place for receptions, dinners and conferences. Such a club represents the university, conveys its status.Leiden's club, belonging to the oldest Dutch university, is situated in a stately building along a prominent canal. Tilburg's club, part of a younger Dutch university, exudes modernity from its setting in between the trees. The club is situated somewhat to the side of the university buildings.Shift architecture urbanism (founded by Harm Timmermans, Thijs van Bijsterveldt and Oana Rade?) made an effort to let the building become part of the university.
The building is a tribute to architect Jos Bedaux. In the sixties of the last century, Bedaux designed the first building of Tilburg University. This listed modernist main building is named after Martinus Cobbenhagen, the university's founder who linked economics with ethics. The Cobbenhagen building excludes the forest like a fortress, but at the same time it has windows and an open gate that embraces its geometrically laid out gardens. The club's building, much smaller than the Cobbenhagen building, establishes its own solidity towards the surrounding trees. At the same time, the large window panes show a distinguished interior. The club building seems to be carved from a large block of natural stone.Similar to the main building, seclusion and transparency become one.
All 4 sides of the club building have one single large window. The windows with hidden frames are more or less recessed. This emphasises on the contrast between space and mass, giving the rectangle a sculptural character. All areas are connected by an axis running the length of the building. □ (Text by Ruud Brouwers, Translated from Dutch by Li-Anne Krol, Proofread by Rens van Hedel)

Comments
ZHU Yimin:The architect claimed that this faculty club was inspired by the first teaching building called the Cobbenhagen designed by the predecessor architect Jos Bedaux in the same campus, although the scales of these two buildings are totally different. The concept of "Monolithic" (which means accommodating different elements under a gigantic and holistic imagery) is adopted by the architect to explain the monolith-like form of the building. However, none of any large stone masonry was used in this architecture.Instead, the great rock-like appearance was created through exterior stone cladding panels with complex and precise tectonics inside. Through large recessed windows, a good conversation was built between the internal architectural space and the external natural scenery. But it's necessary to say that the interior space is slightly dull and homogeneous, without fulfilling the potential of this single-storey building and its monolithic concept. On the whole, it can be described as a building with meticulous and subtle tectonics, high-quality construction completion, and more inheritances rather than breakthroughs. (Translated by CHEN Xi)
ZHANG Miao:Tilburg University is a world famous university located in Tilburg, a southern city in the Netherlands. In the west of the city, the Tilburg University campus is next to Oude Warande, a Baroque forest park built in the 18th century. The selected site for the project is the transition zone between the eastern side of the forest park and the university campus. Despite the superior natural conditions around the site, the architecture design team Shift Architecture Urbanism did not start the composition from the relationship between the site and nature, but from the starting point of the modernist main building on the eastern side of the site completed by the architect Jos Bedaux in 1962.
Therefore, the architects applied the stone facade which is similar in texture to the main building facade to a flat rectangular box, and placed it in the centre of the site, learning from the main building's way of dealing with the building volume through the contrast of solid and void, they also used the floor-to-ceiling glass and large areas of stone facade to form a facade distribution rhythm of large opening and closing, and also providing the functional rooms such as catering and meeting the possibility to be close to the surrounding natural environment. Next to the dense, tall forests, a small one-storey building shows the characteristic of horizontal extension, and is a human construction with nature as its background. Looking up to the tall main building on the other side, this little work is a contemporary successor of architectural classics. (Translated by CHEN Yuxiao)
