Diane:Did you have a good birthday?
Mark:Yes,thanks. My brother took me to see a musical.
Diane:Oh,what did you see?
Mark:We went to see Les Misérables,it was fantastic.
Diane:I’m not really into musicals.I can never understand why they have to burst into song, but the book is really good.
Mark:There's a book?Is it based on the musical?
Diane:No,did you not read the theatre programme?
Mark:No,I didn't bother.
Diane:Well,if you had read it,you would have learned that the musical is actually based on a book.It was published in France in 1862.
Mark:I didn't know that.I thought they'd written it for the musical.Who wrote it?
Diane:Victor Hugo. You must have heard of him?
Mark:He sounds like a fashion designer.Does he do perfume as well?
Diane:Honestly,Mark,I despair of you.You really need to read more.Victor Hugo is one of France's great writers. He wrote Notre-Dame de Paris. You must have heard of that?
Mark:I’ve seen the Disney movie.I really liked that, especially the songs.
Diane:Hugo was one of the literary greats. He was a key part of the Romantic Movement and his writings helped further the cause of Romanticism. He first came to prominence as a poet with his first volume being published when he was only 20 years old.He then went on to write some of France's most famous novels.
Mark:Maybe I should give his book a read.
Diane:I thoroughly recommend it!Les Misérables is an absolute classic. It took Hugo 17 years to write it and it paved the way for writers like Charles Dickens and Fyodor Dostoyevsky to tackle themes such as social injustice. He really brought the social coscience to the forefront in literature and because of this he inspired people to do a lot of good.
Mark:Well, from what I saw on my birthday he writes really good musicals, too.I couldn't get those songs out of my head!
Diane:Mark,you're an idiot!
