A clean-up campaign(運動)has begun at Mount Everest in order to carry away100tons of rubbish by plane, which was left behind by tourists and climbers of the world’s highest mountain.According to the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee(SPCC),over 100,000 people visited the area last year.About 40,000 were mountaineers or hikers.
On its first day,1,200 kg of waste was flown from Lukla airportto Kathmandu forrecycling.Mountaineers are expected to bring back whatever waste they make on their climb. But every year, local guides collect hundreds of kilograms of rubbish.
This year’s clean-up campaign is focused on the waste things that could be recycled in the capital city, with privately-owned Yeti airlines helping to transport. They will continue to carry away lots of recyclable rubbish throughout the year.
Most of the waste left on the mountain is empty beer bottles and cans, empty food tins, and used mountaineering and hiking equipment(設備).That can include oxygen bottles, which are very important for climbing at the highest altitudes.
For decades,clean-up programmes have been run by local guides, known as Sherpas, but are now organized by the SPCC,named after the Nepalese name for the mountain.Sherpas are still the ones who collect the high-altitude waste.
As well as managing the industrial waste left behind by visitors, the SPCC and local guides have to deal with the biological waste left by so many people. In 2015,the country’s mountaineering association warned that the waste left by the tourists was becoming a health hazard(危害).Since then, the SPCC has built portable toilets around the key mountain camps.
The high number of climbers also has increased safety problems—resulting in new rules late last year which stops solo climbers and forces foreign climbers to go with a guide.

1.That can include oxygen bottles, which are very important for climbing at the highest altitude.
2.Since then, the SPCC has built portable toilets around the key mountain camps.
3.The high number of climbers also has increased safety problems...
the number of是固定詞組搭配,意為“……的數(shù)量”,后接可數(shù)名詞的復數(shù)形式。the number of...
