The Smog Free Project is an environmental rehabilitation and air pollution reduction strategy that deploys proven and patented positive ionization technology in places where it is needed the most.Experimental towers were erected in Beijing and Tianjin. Although from a distance, the smog free tower looks like a stand-alone chimney that rises up from the lawn, it actually does the opposite of what a chimney does. Instead of emitting polluting air to the atmosphere at the top opening, the tower draws polluted air in from the top, and filter the air through the blades that collect the smog particles. Each tower cleans 30 000 cubic metres of air per hour, and mainly runs on wind energy so its level of electricity consumption is comparable to a household appliance. The treated air is then released from the bottom part of the tower. At the local level, the park users experience cleaner air than other parts of the city. As part of his larger body of works, called “Landscape of the Future”,Roosegaarde hopes that a multitude of towers may make a diあerence in air quality at the municipal level. But that is not all. The smog dust collected by the towers is processed and made into the stone of a ring. Marketed as the “Smog Free Ring”, the piece of jewellery symbolises the smog collected from 1 000 cubic metre of polluted city air. Akin to pitching in to fund an environmental solution, the ring is a testament to the collective eあort to clean up our planet, and an everyday reminder of what everyone can do to help.
