As people enter the Nagasaki Aguri no Oka Kogen Hotel’s wedding chapel in Nagasaki, Japan, their eyeballs will assuredly be riveted by its intricate space frame truss work. Structurally, the arboreal pillars support the chapel’s roof and pendentive dome, but they also evoke the pointed arches and rib vaults of the Oura Catholic Church, Nagasaki’s Roman Catholic Basilica, which is believed to be Japan’s oldest. There are three layers of pillars. The bottom layer consists of four pillars, and each of which branches out to form eight diagonal frames. Supported by the frames of the bottom layer, the middle layer consists of eight pillars, each of which branches out to form eight diagonal frames. The top layer is similarly supported by the layer of pillars and branches directly underneath it,and comprises sixteen pillars that branch out to form eight diagonal frames. The framework becomes the vital polygonal trusses that support the 25-tonne roof.Made mainly out of lumber, the frames are reinforced with steel rods. Immense glass walls on all four sides of the chapel brings natural lights in, and as the natural landscape is clearly visible throughout the open floor plan. The geometric truss work, nicknamed “the Forest of Oath”, under which wedding vows are made and rings are exchanged, appears to be a work of nature that could only be perfected by a divine hand. Blessed couples getting married in this mesmerising space will have many memorable moments to look back to.
