在英語中，用來修飾名詞表示“許多的”單詞或者短語有很多，概括起來這些詞語可以分為以下三種類型：

一、修飾不可數(shù)名詞

1.much用作形容詞，其基本意思是“許多的”，后常接不可數(shù)名詞。例如：

I have much time to do my homework today.今天我有許多時間做家庭作業(yè)。

2.a great deal of表示“大量的”，只能用在不可數(shù)名詞前。例如：

There is a great deal of snow on the ground.地上有許多雪。

二、修飾可數(shù)名詞

1.many后接復(fù)數(shù)名詞，表示許多同樣的人或物（但數(shù)目不明確）。例如：

Although Mr.Smith has just lived in the city for several months,he has made many friends.史密斯先生盡管在這個城市只居住了幾個月，但交了許多朋友。

2.quite a few意為“相當(dāng)多的，不少的”，用來修飾復(fù)數(shù)名詞。例如：

His cousin has quite a few beautiful stamps.他的表弟有許多漂亮的郵票。

3.a number of意為“若干的，許多的”，后面跟的名詞是復(fù)數(shù)形式。例如：

There are a number of books in the box.這個箱子里有許多書。

the number of意為“……的數(shù)目”，后接可數(shù)名詞的復(fù)數(shù)形式，作主語時，謂語動詞用單數(shù)形式。例如：

The number of tourists is increasing.游客的數(shù)目在上升。

三、既可修飾可數(shù)名詞又可修飾不可數(shù)名詞

1.a lot of意為“許多的”，相當(dāng)于lots of，后接可數(shù)名詞復(fù)數(shù)或不可數(shù)名詞。例如：

He was so thirsty that he drank a lot of water.他如此渴以至于喝了許多水。

The old man eats lots of vegetables every day.這位老人每天吃許多蔬菜。

2.plenty of意為“大量的，很多的”，后接可數(shù)名詞復(fù)數(shù)或不可數(shù)名詞。例如：

There is plenty of research showing that this is one of the best ways to learn English grammar.有許多研究表明這是學(xué)習(xí)英語語法最好的方法之一。

Look!Plenty of children are waiting for the bus over there.看!許多孩子正在那邊等公共汽車。
