Chengdu, a city with a long history of culture, is in the famous Land of Abundance renowned both at home and abroad. It has brought up the people here with its special nutrients and nurtured generation after generation of Sichuan merchants with its unique cultural ethos.

The history of Sichuan merchants lasted long. The ancestors of ancient Sichuan, with great courage to rush out of the Sichuan basin for business purposes, opened up the path along one thousand miles cliff, the Ancient Tea Route, the Shu Cloth Road and the Southern Silk Road one after another and left their footprints all over the country. Sichuan merchants established iron smelting bases in Chengdu, invented“Jiao Zi”, the first paper money in the world, created a miracle of rich wealth andfostered a unique and prosperous culture of Sichuan merchants. The Sichuan cuisine, Sichuan liquor, Sichuan tea, Sichuan salt and Shu embroidery became well known all over the world. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Sichuan merchants have made great contributions to the socialist construction with a new look and new achievements.

Sichuan merchants have undertaken important missions in a long period of time. With the opportunities of in–depth implementation of new round western development strategy and the wave of industrial transfer with foreign investment introduced to west China and domestic investment moving westward, Chengdu has ushered in a rare period of strategic development. The CPC Chengdu Municipal Committee and Chengdu municipal government have put forward an objective of “building a core economic growth pole in western China and constructing a modern international metropolis” and the overall strategy of “reform and innovation,transformation and upgrading.” The economic and social development of Chengdu is glowing with vitality. Sichuan merchants should seize the opportunity of the new era, carry forward the national spirit of the age, inherit the excellent culture of Sichuan merchants, shape a new brand of Sichuan merchants, and create new achievements of Sichuan merchants.
