Whether you are looking for mountain5)gorilla—the country’s primary6)allure—wildlife7)safaris, volcano trekking,8)whitewater rafting or just kicking back on the beach, Uganda has the best.

Gorilla Tracking

One of the9)quintessential Ugandan attractions is tracking mountain gorillas in Bwindi Forest, and nothing quite prepares you for the first glimpse of black10)fuzz amid the dense11)foliage. The12)adrenaline13)kicks in when you are up close to the14)imposing figure of a15)silverback. Curious babies peek through the leaves, twisting, turning and16)somersaulting for your entertainment. Gorilla permits will17)set you back around $500, but do not think twice about giving it up for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Keep in mind that a part of the fee goes to the park and gorilla18)conservation, helping to ensure their survival.

All the Animals, Minus the Crowds

While it lacks the recognition of its famous neighbors like the Serengeti and Kruger Park, Uganda’s national parks have all the animals, minus the crowds. In Murchison Falls, Uganda’s largest park, follow your morning wildlife drive with a cruise down the Nile to the base of the falls. It is the perfect way to19)spy elephants, buffalo and20)loads of hippos while relaxing on the boat with a beer.21)Head to the Queen Elizabeth National Park, there is a better chance of spotting the22)elusive leopard or its trademark treeclimbing lions.

Adventure by the Bucketload

With its Grade five23)rapids, the Nile is a24)magnet for whitewater rafting enthusiasts—try25)kayaking or a nervous26)jet boat ride. Those who prefer a different kind of27)plunge can choose28)bungee jumping by Bujagali Falls. Trekkers can test their29)endurance by tackling the Rwenzori Mountains, which are described as the “Mountains of the Moon,” with amazing views of the30)equatorial mist as a reward at the top.

Scenery to Die For

Once your body needs some rest from those bus journeys, Uganda has some beautiful spots for relaxing. Magical Lake Bunyonyi has wonderful views, with the mist hanging low over31)terraced hillsides and canoes32)gliding through still waters. The Ssese Islands in the oceanic-sized Lake Victoria have some of the finest white-sand beaches and burning sunsets. It’s the kind of place where you will want to seek out a33)hammock and bring a good book.
