Film Music and its Effects in Film Appreciation

This paper mainly discusses the definition of film music and explores its role in film appreciation.

1. Definition of Film Music

Film music is a vital language element of expressing thoughts and emotions of films. Different from common music， film music mainly refers to soundtracks， theme songs and episodes and only has its meaning when integrated with frames， stories and performances(Ye Tian，2011). According to different sources of music， film music can be divided into two types， namely are interior music of frames and exterior music of frames. The former refers to music that is provided by the frames， and mainly manifests as singing，dancing scenes and media playing. Subsequently， the audience can get closer to the film and better experience the atmosphere. Exterior music of frames， in contrast， refers to music that is out of the frames. It has strong openness in that it reflects the director's preference and is associated to director's creating styles and ideas. Exterior music can impel the audience to use their imagination to make comments and evaluations on the film(Yi Ji， 2016).

2. Effects of Film Music in Film Appreciation

Film music serves for vital role and uniqueness in appreciating the films. Specifically， its unique functions are below：

Firstly， embody the cultural value. In films， cultural implication，cultural connotation and cultural form are basic values. Each film has its own specific value and theme where music， as an art with strong infection can further deepen and sublimate the value and theme and meanwhile resonate with the audience(Mei Yang，2015).

Secondly， express characters' emotions. Music has its unique role in expressing emotions and can well compensate the insufficiency of frames in expressing character emotion and well convey the emotions that are difficult to be done by language. By doing so， it helps better express the character emotion and better helps the audience appreciate film.

Thirdly， render and strengthen atmosphere. Films music is mainly used to render the environmental atmosphere including the characteristics of time and space and deepen the artistic infection of film， subsequently to deepen visual effect. By doing so， the audience can have a deep impression of the development and plot of film.

3.Conclusion

Indeed， music is important elements in films and has its uniqueness in conveying the theme and rendering the atmosphere. And only if music and film frames be in well unification， can the film meet the audience's visual and auditory habits and thus the film turns out to be a success.
