Lights display to honor its creator Erin Udell

CSU students and graduates helped set up a popular holiday lights display this year， honoring its creator， who died last summer.

Most nights， you can find Bob and Karen Habel sitting in their car across the street from their house on Ringneck Drive. Theyll park， tune the radio to 100.3 FM and watch as their homes holiday lights display dances to Christmas music which was designed by their late son， Michael.

The display has been an annual tradition for the Habels， ever since Michael saw a YouTube video of a similar display and built his own years ago when he was a freshman at Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins. With his tragic death this summer， the Habels didnt think theyd see it again.

Michael， an electrical engineering major entering his senior year at Colorado State University （CSU）， died unexpectedly on June 5 while at his familys cabin near Walden. The family is still not sure what happened since he was alone at the time， but a near-miss with lightning is suspected.

About 10 people， some still students and some graduated， came to the Habel house to set up the display on Nov. 8. It took them all day and while there were some hiccups， the lights were turned on and will go into the first week of January.

CSU also posted a sign in the Habels front yard that tells Michaels story. On it， theres information about the Michael Habel Memorial Scholarship Fund.

In previous years， Michael collected donations through his holiday lights display to help benefit organizations like Homeless Gear and Meals on Wheels around the holidays. This year， donations will go to his scholarship fund， which his parents are hoping to award to an engineering student at CSU next year.
