青春常在

There is a feeling of Eternity in youth， which makes us amend for everything. To be young is to be as one of the Immortal Gods. One half of time indeed is flown-the other half remains in store for us with all its countless treasures; for there is no line drawn， and we see no limit to our hopes and wishes. We make the coming age our own—The vast， the unbounded prospect lies before us

As in setting out on delightful journey， we strain our eager gaze forward—Bidding the lovely scenes at distance hail！-and see no end to the landscape， new objects presenting themselves as we advance; so， in the commencement of life， we set no bounds to our inclinations， nor to the unrestricted opportunities of gratifying them. We have as yet found no obstacle， no disposition to flag; and it seems that we can go on so forever.

We look round in a new world， full of life， and motion， and ceaseless progress; and feel in ourselves all the vigor and spirit to keep pace with it， and do not foresee from any present symptoms how we shall be left behind in the natural course of things， decline into old age， and drop into the grave. It is the simplicity， and as it were abstractedness of our feelings in youth， that identifies us with nature， and deludes us into a belief of being immortal like it. Our short-lives connection with existence we fondly flatter ourselves， is an indissoluble and lasting union—a honeymoon that knows neither coldness， jar， nor separation. As infants smile and sleep， we are rocked in the cradle of our wayward fancies， and lulled into security by the roar of the universe around us. We quaff the cup of life with eager haste without draining it， instead of which it only overflows the more objects press around us， filling the mind with their magnitude and with the strong of desires that wait upon them， so that we have no room for the thoughts of death.

青春有一種永生之感——它能彌補一切。人在青年時代好像一尊永生的神明。誠然，生命的一半已以消逝，但蘊藏著不盡財富的另一半還有所保留，我們對它也抱著無窮的希望和幻想。未來的時代完全屬于我們——無限遼闊的遠景在我們面前展現(xiàn)。

像是剛剛走上愉快的旅程，極目遠眺——向遠方的美景歡呼！此時，但覺好風光應接不暇，而且，前程更有美不勝收的新鮮景致。在這生活的開端，我們聽任自己的志趣馳騁，放手給它們一切滿足的機會。到此為止，我們還沒有碰上過什么障礙，也沒有感覺到什么疲憊，因此覺得還可以一直這樣向前走去，直到永遠。

我們看到四周一派新天地——生機盎然，變動不居，日新月異;我們覺得自己活力充盈，精神飽滿，可與宇宙并駕齊驅(qū)。而且，眼前也無任何跡象可以證明，在大自然的發(fā)展過程中，我們自己也會落伍，衰老，進入墳墓。由于年輕人天真單純，可以說是茫然無知，因而將自己跟大自然劃上等號;并且，由于經(jīng)驗少而感情盛，誤以為自己也能和大自然一樣永世長存。我們一廂情愿，癡心妄想，竟把自己在世上的暫時棲身，當作千古不變、萬事長存的結(jié)合，好像沒有冷淡、爭執(zhí)、離別的密月。像嬰兒帶著微笑入睡，我們躺在用自己編織成的搖籃里，讓大千世界的萬籟之聲催哄我們安然入夢;我們急切切，興沖沖地暢飲生命之杯，怎么也不會飲干，反而好像永遠是滿滿欲溢;森羅萬象紛至沓來，各種欲望隨之而生，使我們騰不出工夫想死亡。

The old cat

An old woman had a cat. The cat was very old; she could not run quickly， and she could not bite， because she was so old. One day the old cat saw a mouse; she jumped and caught the mouse. But she could not bite it; so the mouse got out of her mouth and ran away， because the cat could not bite it.

Then the old woman became very angry because the cat had not killed the mouse. She began to hit the cat. The cat said， “Do not hit your old servant. I have worked for you for many years， and I would work for you still， but I am too old. Do not be unkind to the old， but remember what good work the old did when they were young.”

Fox and cock

One morning a fox sees a cock. He think， “This is my breakfast.” He comes up to the cock and says， “I know you can sing very well. Can you sing for me？” The cock is glad.He closes his eyes and begins to sing. The fox sees that and catches him in his mouth and carries him away. The people in the field see the fox. They cry，“Look，look！The fox is carrying the cock away.” The cock says to the fox，“Mr Fox， do you understand？ The people say you are carrying their cock away. Tell them it is yours. Not theirs.” The fox opens his mouth ang says， “The cock is mine， not yours.” Just then the cock runs away from the fox and flies into the tree.

The blind man and the cub

There was once a blind man who had so fine a sense of touch that， when any animal was put into his hands， he could tell what it was merely by the feel of it. One day the cub of a wolf was put into his hands， and he was asked what it was. He felt it for some time， and then said， “Indeed， I am not sure whether it is a wolfs cub or a foxs： but this I know—it would never do to trust it in a sheepfold.” Evil tendencies are early shown.

老貓

一位老婦有只貓，這只貓很老，它跑不快了，也咬不了東西，因為它年紀太大了。一天，老貓發(fā)現(xiàn)一只老鼠，它跳過去抓這只老鼠，然而，它咬不住這只老鼠。因此，老鼠從它的嘴邊溜掉了，因為老貓咬不了它。

于是，老婦很生氣，因為老貓沒有把老鼠咬死。她開始打這只貓，貓說：“不要打你的老仆人，我已經(jīng)為你服務了很多年，而且還愿意為你效勞，但是，我實在太老了，對年紀大的不要這么無情，要記住老年人在年青時所做過的有益的事情?！?/p>

狐貍和公雞

一天早上，一只狐貍看到了一只公雞。他想：這是我的早餐。他朝公雞走來，對他說：“我知道，你能唱得很好聽，你能唱給我聽么？”公雞特別開心。他閉上眼睛開始唱歌。狐貍看到這些抓住它放到自己的嘴里走了。在田地里的人們看到了狐貍，大叫：“看，看！狐貍抓住公雞逃走了?！惫u對狐貍說：“狐貍先生，你能理解么？人們認為你叼走了公雞。告訴他們這是你的，不是他們的。” 狐貍張開她的嘴說：“公雞是我的，不是你們的?！本驮谀菚r，公雞跑到了樹底下。

盲人與小野獸

從前，有一個人眼睛雖然瞎了，可是他精于嗅覺，只要用手摸一摸，憑借著觸感就便能說出這是什么動物。有一天，一只小狼崽被送到他的手中，請他告知這是什么東西。他用手摸了一會兒，然后說：“我不太確定，這到底是一只小狼崽，還是一只狐貍的幼崽，但是有一點我十分確定，千萬別讓它進羊圈。”惡劣的本性從小便知。
