Sweet-faced， curly-haired Shirley Temple was born in Santa Monica， California in April， 1928. She was enrolled （入學(xué)） in dance school at the age of three.

By the age of six， she had been able to match the great Bill Robinson and tap-dance （跳踢踏舞） down the staircase （樓梯） in “The Little Colonel”. She found fame as a young girl in the 1930s in films like “Bright Eyes”， “Stand Up and Cheer” and “Curly Top”.

She acted in even better “Captain January”， for her role in which she got a special Academy Award in 1935， when she was just six years old. No one would doubt that she could act if they watched her five different expressions while eating in “Poor Little Rich Girl”.

Her films were all about bringing grown-ups back together and melting （融化） frozen hearts. She cheered up （使……振作） the nation during the Great Depression （經(jīng)濟(jì)大蕭條） so that President Franklin D. Roosevelt called her “Little Miss Miracle” and said， “as long as our country has Shirley Temple， we will be all right”.

Advertisers adored （崇拜；熱愛） Temple， from General Electric to soap to cars. Her face was on the food boxes， bowls and cups. She even had a drink named after her. After “Stand up and Cheer”， dolls wearing her polka-dot （圓點(diǎn)紋） dress appeared， and after “Bright Eyes”， the music “The Good Ship Lollipop” was on every piano， as well as in everyones brain.

After retiring from films in 1950 at the age of 21， Temple returned to the public eye in politics. She unsuccessfully ran for Congress （議會(huì)） as a Republican （共和黨） in 1967. But， she was appointed as Americas ambassador （大使） to Ghana （加納） in 1974.
