The Secret Gardenis a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett in last century. It is considered to be a classic of English children’sliterature(文學(xué)),and is also noted as one of the bestchildren’sbooksof the Twentieth Century.
The story is about a selfish 10-year-old girl named Mary, spoiled(被寵壞的)and with a temper. She is born in India with wealthy British parents.Cholera(霍亂) breaks out and kills Mary’s parents. Then she is sent to Yorkshire,England to livewith her uncle,Mr.Craven.
At first,Mary is lonely, disliking her uncle’s large house, the people within it.Martha,hergood-natured(善良的;脾氣好的)maidservant(女仆),tells Mary a story of Mrs.Craven, her aunt who would spend hours growing roses in a private garden. After Mrs.Craven was killed in anunfortunate(不幸的)accident,Mr.Craven had the garden locked and the key buried.
Mary is roused by this story and starts to soften her ill manner and begins to lose herdisposition(性情). Soon shegradually(逐漸地)comes to enjoy the company of Martha,Ben Weatherstaff the gardener, and also a lonelyrobin redbreast(知更鳥)in the garden.
Mary’s time is occupied by wondering about the secret garden and a strange crying sound that can sometimes be heard in the midnight which the servants ignore ordeny(否認(rèn)).Shechances to(偶然發(fā)生)follow the robin redbreast, comes across abadger(獾)hole and finds a key to the secret garden.
One night,Mary hears the crying again. She follows the noise and,to her surprise, finds a small boy of her age, living in a hidden bedroom. His name is Colin and she discovers that they are cousins:he is the son of her uncle;his mother died when he was a baby, and hesuffers from(遭受)anunspecified(未指明的)problem with hisspine(脊柱).
Since then,Mary visits every day, tells Colin the stories of the garden. One day,Colin is put into hiswheelchair(輪椅)and brought outside into the garden by the children, the first time he’s been outdoors in years.Since then,Colin spends every day in the garden, becoming stronger. Finally,he stands up out of his chair and finds that his legs are fine, though weak from not using them for a long time.
The childrenconspire(共同謀劃)to keep Colin’s health a secret so he can surprise his father, who is traveling andmourning over(哀悼)his latewife.AsMr. Craven returns and is shocked to see the garden in full bloom with children in it and his son running around,he walks theouterwall inmemory and restores the loveof life.
One of the strange things about living in the world is that it is only now and then(有時(shí))one is quite sure one is going to live forever and ever and ever. One knows it sometimeswhen one gets up at the tender(溫柔的)solemn (莊嚴(yán)的) dawn-time and goes out and stands alone and throws one’s head far back and looks up and up and watches the pale sky slowly changing and flushing (發(fā)紅) and marvelous(令人驚異的)unknown things happening until the East almostmakes one cry out and one’s heart stands still at the strange unchanging majesty (威嚴(yán)的)of the rising of the sun——which has been happening every morning for thousands and thousands and thousands of years. One knows it then for amoment or so(大約;左右). And one knows it sometimeswhen one stands by oneself in a wood at sunset and the mysterious (神秘的)deep gold stillness slanting (傾斜)through and under the branches seems to be saying slowly again and again something one cannot quite hear, howevermuch one tries. Then sometimes the immense (無邊無際的)quiet of the dark blue at night with millions of stars waiting and watching makes one sure;and sometimes a sound of far-off(遙遠(yuǎn)的)musicmakes it true;and sometimes a look in some one’s eyes.
