Ben Baker
Joanne (comedienne): My name is Joanne Grimm, Im from Oakland, California, and my ambition in this old age is to make as many people laugh as possible.
Margaret (painter): My name is Margaret Tcheng Ware and I live in San Francisco.
Eugenia: Im Eugenia Lovett West, I live in Essex, Connecticut, and Im a late-blooming writer.
Henry: My name is Henry Taylor. Most people know me as a…as a painter.
Audrey (painter): My name is Audrey Phillips, and I live in a beautiful little arts community on the coast of Florida, and its New Smyrna Beach.
Judithe (painter): My name is Judithe Hernández, I was born with a brush in my hand. Its one of those situations where I had no choice. I never had any other ambition but to be an artist.
Eugenia: I was a journalist. I started doing 1)freelance writing, but you begin to like to turn 300 words into 300 pages, and when that happens, youve got a book on your hands.
Margaret: I was looking for something to do that really would engage me after I retired from dance. As a 2)rank beginner I went into a foundation art course, where I was taught to draw, and I found from day one that I was absolutely hooked.
Audrey: My art came about as a search for a healing process. My mother was murdered, along with one of her employees, and I spent about 10 years searching for a way to heal and relieve the anger and all of the emotions that were inside of me from this experience.
Henry: You know, your experience creates the narrative, you know, I mean sometimes you might, like a writer or anybody else, you 3)incorporate the past. If youre writin a song, youre writin about experience. Some people say,“Well, you know, you gotta pay your dues.” Well, what theyre, I think what theyre referring to is your past.
Eugenia: The more you do, the more you find your own rhythm, your own style, and Im not sure that age makes the difference, but I think you just have to put in those hours.
Audrey: You can think your way out of a lot of things, and you really dont want to think too much about it. You want to just do it.
Margaret: Never feel 4)intimidated. People always say, “Oh, I cant draw,” and Ive seen people in art school, other students that I was with, who I thought, “Wow, really, maybe, you know, you have a long way to go,” But, guess what, in a few months, in a year, theyd be someplace else and Id say, “Wow!” Its something anyone can learn to do. Judithe: If its the only thing you really would be happy spending your life doing, then thats what you ought to be doing.
Henry: I think its important to allow yourself to be vulnerable and 5)impressionable and just receptive. Joanne: Bob Hope used to say, “Tell a hundred jokes a minute and theyll laugh at at least one.”
Henry: Just live your life and just, thats all. Youre only here one time. Just go for it. Really, just go for it.
Eugenia: Its never too late to start. Dont be discouraged about rejections. Youve got many years ahead of you, which is wonderful.
