阿瑟·韋利精通多種語言,如意大利文、葡萄牙文、荷蘭文、法文、德文、西班牙文,此外他還能閱讀蒙古文、阿伊努文和梵文。進(jìn)入博物館東方部后,他又自學(xué)漢語和日語??死锏淖顝V泛的傳播翻譯一直是中國古典的孫子戰(zhàn)爭(《孫子兵法》)藝術(shù)。
《論語》是一部記載孔子及其弟子言論的著作。翻譯《論語》存在理解上的問題,主要有兩方面的原因:一是孔子的思想內(nèi)涵深刻,往往一個(gè)概念就表達(dá)了非常復(fù)雜的內(nèi)容。第二是語言的原因??鬃訒r(shí)代的古漢語,就是當(dāng)時(shí)的中國人理解起來都有困難,況且在這個(gè)兩千多年的時(shí)間里,曾出現(xiàn)過不同本子的“論語”,后人又做過不少的注解詮釋工作,如三國魏何晏的《論語集解》,宋朱熹的《論語集注》等,注解在一些地方也有歧見。這就又增加了理解的難度。
2.1 【原文】曾子曰:“吾日三省吾身。為人謀而不忠乎?與朋友交而不信乎?傳不習(xí)乎?”
【譯文】曾子說:“我每天多次反省自己,為別人辦事是不是盡心竭力了呢?同朋友交往是不是做到誠實(shí)可信了呢?老師傳授給我的學(xué)業(yè)是不是復(fù)習(xí)了呢?”
Master Zeng,one of the pupils of Confucius,said,“I examine myself three times a day:Have I been unfaithful in planning for others?Have I been unreliable in conversation with friends?Am I preaching what I haven't preached myself?(Trans.by Cleary)
Master Zeng said,Every day I examine myself on three points:In acting on behalf of others,have I always been loyal to their interests?In intercourse with my friends,have I always been true to my word?Have I failed to repeat the precepts that have been handed down to me?(Trans.by Waley)
點(diǎn)評:兩段譯文經(jīng)比較可看出,前者起碼有兩處處理失當(dāng)。第一,Loyal通常形容對人忠誠,faithful則是對事有信念,此處用loyal顯得更為恰當(dāng)。第二,“三省”本詞在多個(gè)譯本中頗有爭議,三省:省(音xǐng),檢查、察看。三省有幾種解釋:一是三次檢查;二是從三個(gè)方面檢查;三是多次檢查。其實(shí),古代在有動(dòng)作性的動(dòng)詞前加上數(shù)字,表示動(dòng)作頻率多,不必認(rèn)定為三次?!巴g”thress points與下文“為人謀”、“與朋友交”、“傳不習(xí)”三點(diǎn)對應(yīng)。另外,“傳不習(xí)乎”,Cleary譯為“Am I preaching what I haven’t preached myself”,把“傳”理解為“去傳給別人”,“傳播孔子的學(xué)說”,而不是“孔子傳給的東西”。Waley譯為“repeat the precepts that have been handed down to me”,即“傳給我的東西是否溫習(xí)了。”這種譯法比較符合原意。
還應(yīng)指出,Cleary在這里用了conversation一詞來翻譯“交往”。Conversation現(xiàn)在英語中一般做“談話”講,“交往”是這個(gè)詞很古的一個(gè)用法。Cleary顯然是在用詞的古意來表示“論語”古漢語的表達(dá)方式,以盡力體現(xiàn)漢語原文的風(fēng)格[1]。
2.2 【原文】子曰:“不患無位,患所以立;不患莫己知,求為可知也?!?/p>
【譯文】孔子說:“不怕沒有官位,就怕自己沒有學(xué)到賴以站得住腳的東西。不怕沒有人知道自己,只求自己成為有真才實(shí)學(xué)值得為人們知道的人?!?/p>
Confucius said,“Don't worry about having no position;worry about that whereby you may effectively become established.Don't worry that no one recognizes you;seek to be worthy of recognition.”(Trans.by Cleary)
The master said,He does not mind not being in office;all he minds about is whether he has qualities that entitle him to office.He does not mind failing to get recognition;he is to busy doing the things that entitle him to recognition[2].(Trans.by Waley)
點(diǎn)評:這兩段譯文的行文風(fēng)格區(qū)別明顯。第一段譯文主要運(yùn)用,“don’t worry about”句式,有些祈使意味,第二段運(yùn)用“he”,相比而言,在語氣上,“威譯”更為恰當(dāng)。還有一處區(qū)別是“無位”的“位”,position指的是職位,in office表示執(zhí)政,在位。筆者認(rèn)為,官位,即為所在的職位,position更為合適。且參照多位論語譯者的譯文,更多的人選擇用position。另外,“患所以立”這半句兩位譯者翻譯得都非常精彩?!扒鬄榭芍病保琖aley的理解稍有偏差。
2.3 【原文】子曰:“吾未見剛者?!被?qū)υ?“申棖?!弊釉?“棖也欲,焉得剛?”
【譯文】孔子說:“我沒有見過剛強(qiáng)的人?!庇腥嘶卮鹫f:“申棖就是剛強(qiáng)的?!笨鬃诱f:“申棖這個(gè)人欲望太多,怎么能剛強(qiáng)呢?”
Confucius said,“I have never seen anyone who was firm.”Someone named a certain disciple.Confucius said,“He is covetous-h(huán)ow can he be firm?”(Trans.by Cleary)
The Master said,I have never yet seen a man who was truly steadfast.Someone answered saying,‘Shen Cheng.’The Master said,Cheng!He is at the mercy of his desires.How can he be called steadfast[3]?(Trans.by Waley)
點(diǎn)評:兩段譯文比較,原始意蘊(yùn)都得到簡約的表達(dá),譯文的“信”度是高的,第二段譯文的行文除了做到守“信”之外,更在“達(dá)”、“雅”上下工夫。特別是‘Shen Cheng.’The Master said,Cheng!He is at the mercy of his desires.一掃單調(diào)之氣,讀來活潑生動(dòng),使人印象深刻??鬃酉騺碚J(rèn)為,一個(gè)人的欲望多了,他就會(huì)違背周禮。從這一章來看,人的欲望過多不僅做不到“義”,甚至也做不到“剛”。孔子不普遍地反對人們的欲望,但如果想成為有崇高理想的君子,那就要舍棄各種欲望,一心向道。Covetous(貪婪)、desire(欲望),前者貶義成分較多,后者較為中性。根據(jù)語義,desire更為恰當(dāng)。
2.4 子曰:“飯疏食飲水,曲肱而枕之,樂亦在其中矣。不義而富且貴,于我如浮云?!?/p>
【譯文】孔子說:“吃粗糧,喝白水,彎著胳膊當(dāng)枕頭,樂趣也就在這中間了。用不正當(dāng)?shù)氖侄蔚脕淼母毁F,對于我來講就像是天上的浮云一樣?!?/p>
Confucius said,“Even if my fare is plain and my lifestyle austere,I still find pleasure in them.Riches and status unjustly attained are to me like floating clouds.(Trans.by Cleary)
The Master said,He who seeks only coarse food to eat,water to drink and a bent arm for pillow,will without looking for it find happiness to boot.Any thought of accepting wealth and rank by means that I know to be wrong is as remote from me as the clouds that float above.(Trans.by Waley)
點(diǎn)評:對比而言,Waley的譯文更加確切,行文更為得體。譬如,對于“飯疏食,飲水,曲肱而枕之”,Cleary采用意譯法,而Waley采用直譯法。在翻譯最后一句話時(shí),Waley增加了“as remote from me as”,把意思說得淺顯明白。
本文對譯本的得失進(jìn)行評析,以具體的統(tǒng)計(jì)與實(shí)例顯示,他們總體質(zhì)量以今天的眼光來看并不是太高;同時(shí)他們確有其擋不住的精彩之處。本文探討典籍英譯的“兩個(gè)合理性”問題:語義的合理性與句法的合理性,認(rèn)為這兩者實(shí)際是一種語言文本格柵向另一種語言文本格柵轉(zhuǎn)換的主要內(nèi)容。典籍英譯追求譯文語義上的合理性具有第一位的重要性;同時(shí),還應(yīng)最大程度地追求譯文在句法上的合理性?!巴g”雖在語義合理性上不盡如人意,但在句法合理性上倒是可圈可點(diǎn)。“威譯”至今仍在很大范圍內(nèi)獲得肯定。
