HP has announced the launch of Power To Change, a campaign that encourages personal computer users around the world to make behavioural changes in support of the environment. The campaign encourages users to download a new desktop widget that tracks the cumulative energy savings associated with participants turning off idle PCs when not in use. HP estimates that if 100,000 users shut down their work computers at the end of each day, the energy savings would be the equivalent of eliminating more than 105 cars from the road each day. Power To Change is available in five languages: Chinese, English, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish.
IBM global survey shows information gap in sustainability strategies
IBMs second annual global corporate social responsibility survey of senior business executives again shows significant gaps between their goals and their ability to attain them. Nearly all of the 224 respondents said they remain committed to incorporating CSR principles into their business strategies – despite the global recession – to improve business performance, societal contribution and reputation. However, the survey shows that companies arent collecting and analyzing all the right information about CSR or aggregating it often enough, and not sufficiently engaging their suppliers and customers in this process.

EU to Tighten Banking Supervision
In order to tighten banking supervision and avoid another financial crisis, the European Commission is pushing to give European regulators the power to overrule national banking authorities. The commission called for a two-tier system: A European Systemic Risk Council—comprised of members from national central banks and led by the European Central Banks president—would assess regional financial stability threats, and a European System of Financial Supervisors—with members drawn from regulators in the 27 member states—would oversee individual banks and financial firms.
Obama Announces Stricter Rules on Emissions and Mileage
U.S. President Barack Obama announced plans for new nationwide rules—to take effect in 2012—for auto emissions and an average mileage standard of 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016. That standard—which is in line with rules California has been trying to enact for years, over objections from the auto industry—would be 40 percent cleaner and more fuel-efficient than it is today. Environmentalists called the rules long overdue, while auto officials welcomed a single national efficiency standard and were pleased with the timetable.
World Summit Urges Top Business Leaders to Back Climate Change Deal
Top business executives and political leaders left last weeks World Business Summit on Climate Change in Copenhagen with one clear message: Business leaders must fight to persuade governments to reach a global deal on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This event was a precursor to the UN-brokered negotiations taking place this December to decide on a successor to the Kyoto Protocol. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon compared the current climate crisis to that of the financial fallout: “Our carbon-based infrastructure is like a toxic asset that threatens the portfolio of global goods, from public health to food security.”
It's in the Bag: China Ban Makes Big Impact
Nearly one year after China banned the production of ultra-thin plastic bags and ordered shops to stop giving carriers away for free, the country has saved the equivalent of 1.6 million tons of oil. According to the China Chain Store and Franchise Association, the ban has saved the country 40 billion plastic bags, and reduced the use of plastic bags by two-thirds. This move—which went further than initiatives in the United States, the U.K., and other developed nations—was hailed by environmental organizations as a sign of the growing environmental awareness in China. In spite of the ban, China still produces a million tons of trash a day, and that number is expected to rise.
EU Roundtable Measures Up Food and Drink
The EU sustainable food chain roundtable—composed of farmers and suppliers, food and drink producers, packaging firms and consumer organizations—launched last week, with the goal of devising a plan to assess the environmental footprints of individual foods and drinks by 2011. The roundtable also aims to provide effective consumer communications and reports on improvements. A challenge for the group will be boosting economic growth while maintaining sustainability: “As long as prices go down, we are not going to reach sustainability,” said European farmer lobbyist Pekka Pesonen.
