美國(guó)歷史上有幾位總統(tǒng)都經(jīng)歷過(guò)不同的磨難，但最終都成功地入主了白宮。讓我們來(lái)看看他們都是誰(shuí)，聽(tīng)聽(tīng)他們談?wù)劗?dāng)總統(tǒng)的感受吧！
Some American presidents in the 19th century were born in poor families. They spent their childhood in small and simple wooden houses. They had not enough money to study all the way at school.
Washington and Lincoln，for example，never went to school and they taught themselves. When Lincoln was young，he had to do a lot of work to get some money for his family. He did many jobs. He had been a worker，salesman，postman，and so on. But every day after work he would read books. He read all the books he could borrow from the people he knew.
Some American presidents had been soldiers in their early years. The two best known were Grant and Eisenhower. Grant was a general in the American Civil War(美國(guó)內(nèi)戰(zhàn)) and Eisenhower was a hero in the Second World War. It is surprising that they were from the same school——West Point Military Academy(西點(diǎn)軍校). One may be also surprised to learn that both of them did not do well in the school. Eisenhower，for example，was fined(罰款) because he broke the rules of the school.
The work of U.S. presidents is difficult to do. He must keep an eye on anything important which happens both at home and in other countries. Every day，a lot of work waits for him to do，and he has to make many important decisions.
When Franklin Roosevelt was a child，he was once brought to visit President Taft. The old president said to him，“When you grow up，you should not be a president. Its a tiring job.”

舉例來(lái)說(shuō)，華盛頓和林肯就從未進(jìn)過(guò)學(xué)校，他們?nèi)孔詫W(xué)成才。林肯年輕的時(shí)候?yàn)榱私o家里掙點(diǎn)錢(qián)不得不干許多的活。他換過(guò)很多工作崗位，當(dāng)過(guò)工人、店員、郵遞員等等。但是每天下班后他都要讀書(shū)，他閱讀所有能借得到的書(shū)。
有的總統(tǒng)早年曾是軍人，最有名的兩位就是格蘭特和艾森豪威爾。格蘭特是美國(guó)內(nèi)戰(zhàn)時(shí)期的一位將軍，艾森豪威爾則是二戰(zhàn)時(shí)期的功臣。令人吃驚的是，他們都畢業(yè)于同一所學(xué)?！绹?guó)的西點(diǎn)軍校。如果知道了他們?cè)谛１憩F(xiàn)都不好的話，你也許會(huì)更吃驚。比如說(shuō)，艾森豪威爾就曾因違反校規(guī)而被罰過(guò)款。
美國(guó)總統(tǒng)的工作很難做，他必須密切關(guān)注國(guó)內(nèi)外發(fā)生的任何重要的事情。每天都有許多工作等著他去處理，他還不得不做出許多重要的決定。
當(dāng)弗蘭克林·羅斯福還是個(gè)孩子的時(shí)候，有一次有人帶他去見(jiàn)塔夫特總統(tǒng)。那位年老的總統(tǒng)當(dāng)時(shí)對(duì)他說(shuō)，“等你長(zhǎng)大了，別去當(dāng)總統(tǒng)，做總統(tǒng)是令人厭倦的工作?！?/p>
