      Ⅲ.閱讀理解

      (A)

When a rather dirty, poorly dressed person kneels at your feet and puts out his hands to beg for a few coins, do you hurry on, not knowing what to do, or do you feel sad and hurriedly hand over some money? What should our attitude to beggars be? There can be no question that the world is full of terribly sad stories. It must be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is going to come from. It seems cruel not to give some money to beggars.

Certainly, most of the worlds great religions(宗教) order us to be open-hearted and share what we have with those less fortunate than ourselves. But has the world changed? Maybe what was morally (道德方面) right in the old days, when one knew exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help, is no longer the best idea. Quite a few people will not give to beggars. Let us look at their arguments.

First, some believe that many city beggars dress up on purpose to look pitiable and actually make a good living from begging. Giving to beggars only encourages this sort of evil(惡行). Secondly, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs. Thirdly, there is the opinion that there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor, but that is no reason for losing ones sense of pride and self-dependence.

Related to this is the opinion that the problem should be dealt with by the government rather than ordinary people. Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and receive help.

It is hard to come to any final conclusion: there are various cases and we must deal with them differently. A few coins can save a life in some situations, and even if the money is wasted, that does not take away the moral goodness of the giver.

      1. What is mainly discussed in the passage? ____.

      A. Moral deeds of people

      B. Religious activities of the church

      C. Moral goodness of the church

      D. Arguments on giving to beggars

      2. What can we infer from the sentence “But has the world changed?” in the second paragraph? ____.

      A. People no longer know who suffers misfortune in the village

      B. Some people will not do what was morally right in the past

      C. We dont meet with those who need help any more

      D. Now it is the governments duty to help the beggars

      3. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage? ____.

      A. Some people dress up to pretend to be beggars

      B. Some beggars want money to help their children go to school

      C. Some beggars use the money to buy drugs

      D. Some beggars have no excuse for begging

      4. In the last paragraph, the writer thinks that it is hard to come to any final conclusion, because ____.

      A. the cases can be so different

      B. there are so many beggars

      C. there is so much money wasted

      D. there are so many different arguments

      (B)

Why are so many people so afraid of failure? Simply because no one tells us how to fail so that failure becomes an experience that will lead to growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail.

Most parents work hard at either preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower standards. A mother describes her childs hurriedly made table as “perfect”! Even though it couldnt stand on uneven (not same in height) legs. Another way is to shift blame. If John fails in science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.

The trouble with failure prevention methods is that they leave a child unequipped for life in the real world. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time and that its possible to enjoy a game even when you dont win. A child who is not invited to a birthday party, who doesnt make the honor roll or the baseball team feel terrible, of course. But parents should not offer a quick comfort prize or say “It doesnt matter”, because it does. The young should be allowed to experience disappointment and be helped to master it.

Failure is never pleasurable. It hurts grown-ups and children exactly alike. But it can make a positive contribution to your life once you learn to use it. Step one is to ask “Why did I fail?”. Control the natural impulse(沖動) to blame someone else. Ask yourself what you did wrong, how you can improve. If someone else can help, dont be shy about asking them.

      1. This passage mainly tells us about ____.

      A. the reasons why people fail

      B. how to fail

      C. the ways to prevent failures

      D. the importance of facing failures

      2. When the writer says “every person has the right to fail”, he means to say ____.

      A. no one can grow up mentally without failures

      B. no one is perfect

      C. failures are quite common in our lives

      D. the world is full of failures

      3. By “protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed”, the writer means that most parents try their best ____.

      A. to let their children know that they wont fail

      B. not to teach their children about knowledge of failure

      C. to provide their children for the knowledge against failure

      D. to keep their children from realizing that they failed

      4. According to the writer, ____.

      A. parents should tell their children to think nothing of not being chosen into a football team

      B. children should be encouraged to get rid of disappointment all by themselves

      C. parents should judge what their children have done as it is

      D. children should learn to enjoy a game that they wont win

      (C)

Who is there among us, who hasnt dreamed of having his or her own small(maybe, several years later, even big) business, and having wonderful freedom, both from a boss and from the time clock; the freedom to make up our own rules for our work, and our own plans—arranging our own hours of work? That way work would be both painless and fun. Or, so we imagine.

Well, in fact it isnt quite as simple as that. Yes, it is true that being the boss has its satisfactions and that you can arrange your working hours freely if you own your own small business. But in those early years of starting your own business, you shouldnt think of a free day, not to mention flying off for a months vacation. It is not unusual for new business owners to work seventy or eighty hours a week, and if there is a day off, that day might need to be devoted to accounting(算賬).

But this negative picture doesnt destroy the beautiful hopes. The possibility of getting something wonderful in return—both material and mental—continues to drive that large number of people who start up small businesses each year in the United States.

      1. From the first paragraph, we know that everybody hopes ____.

      A. to rule others B. to be his or her own boss

      C. to get a time clock D. to be free from work

      2. Most new business owners have to ____.

      A. work more than 10 hours a day

      B. devote himself to accounting

      C. fly to some places in the world

      D. have a day off in a week

      3. The expression “negative picture” most probably means “____”.

      A. a terrible experience B. a poor picture

      C. limited freedom D. unpleasant situations

      4. The beautiful hopes will never be destroyed because ____.

      A. people love beautiful things by nature

      B. people have a strong desire to seek personal gains

      C. small businesses make big money each year in the US

      D. small businesses have advantages over big companies

      (D)

Parents should stop blaming themselves because theres not a lot they can do about it. I mean the teenager(十幾歲的孩子) problem. Whatever you do or however you choose to deal with it, at certain times a wonderful, reasonable and helpful child will turn into a terrible animal.

Ive seen friends deal with it in all kinds of different ways. One strict mother insisted that her son, right from a child, should stand up whenever anyone entered the room, open doors and shake hands like a gentleman. I saw him last week when I called round. Sprawling himself (懶散地躺) on the sofa in full length, he made no attempt to turn off the loud TV he was watching as I walked in, and his greeting was no more than a quick glance at me. His mother was ashamed. “I dont know what to do with him these days,” she said. “Hes forgotten all the manners we taught him.”

He hasnt forgotten them. Hes just decided that hes not going to use them. She confessed(坦白) that she would like to come up behind him and throw him down from the sofa onto the floor.

Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across the table, stare at me and say, “I dont like your dress; its ugly.” One of the daughters has recently been driven out of school. The other has left home.

“Where did we go wrong?” Her parents are now very sad. Probably nowhere much. At least no more than the rest of that unfortunate race, parents.

      1. This text is most probably written by ____.

      A. a specialist in teenager studies

      B. a headmaster of a middle school

      C. a parent with teenage children

      D. a doctor for mental health problems

      2. The boy on the sofa would most probably be described as ____.

      A. lazy B. quiet C. unusual D. rude

      3. From the second example we can infer that the parents of the two daughters ____.

      A. pay no attention to them

      B. are too busy to look after them

      C. have come to hate them

      D. feel helpless to do much about them

      4. What is the authors opinion about the sudden change in teenage children? ____.

      A. Parents have no choice but to try to accept it

      B. Parents should pay still more attention to the change

      C. Parents should work more closely with school teachers

      D. Parents are at fault for the change in their children

      (E)

More American people take their troubles with them on holiday, according to a new survey. Although 40 percent said that the main reason for going away is to escape pressure(壓力) from work, almost all said they worry more than they do at home. Only four in every 100 said that they are happy and free of care.

The most common worry is burglary(入室盜竊), with four out of 10 worrying about their homes being broken into while theyre abroad. More than a quarter fear they will feel crazy with some other noisy and rough holiday-makers and 22 percent worry they may be attacked or their possessions will be missing. One in five think the car may break down, and the same number worry about the chances of bad weather.

The survey also showed that the stay-at-home Americans are no more. Three out of every five want to have a holiday abroad, a great increase from the figures only three years ago. The hotel holiday is still a winner, with about one third of all Americans preferring to go on a self-catering(自助) holiday.

      A. research B. review C. exhibition D. examination

      A. be attacked or lose their possessions

      B. have problems with their cars on the road

      A. At a hotel

      B. In a quiet place

      C. At a friends house
